  • Let It Ride *•.»★Bachman-Turner Overdrive BTO
Bachman-Turner Overdrive got the idea for this song when they were on tour. They were driving along a highway in the US when a few truckers decided to have some fun with the band, who were riding in the little van from Canada. The truckers boxed them in and slowed down to a crawl. When they finally turned into a truckstop the band followed them with the intent to give them a good talking to. Unfortunately, in the words of Randy Bachman, "The trucker looked like a Volkswagen with a head." The truckers had a

  • Rock Of Ages *•.»★ Def Leppard + lyrics
The band had the music written for this, but were having trouble coming up with lyrics. One night, there was a bible study group in the studio and the next day, lead singer Joe Elliott found a bible open to the hymn "Rock Of Ages." He started singing the phrase and Lange thought it would be perfect for the chorus. They used it as the title and wrote the rest of the lyrics from there. This song references Neil Young in the opening lines: "I've got something to say / It's better to burn out / Than fade away!"

  • Let's Get Rocked *•.»★ Def Leppard + lyrics
"Rock" is a popular topic for Def Leppard; they also gave us "Rock Of Ages" "Rocket" and "Rock! Rock! (Till You Drop)." All this Rock framed in the massive productions of the meticulously crafted Def Leppard songs raised the ire of some critics, who accused the band of being without substance. Lead singer Joe Elliott spoke about the reaction to this song in his interview with Kaos 2000 magazine. Said Elliott: "I have a line in the song, 'I suppose rock's out of the question.' They missed the point that it's

  • ANIMAL *•.»★ Def Leppard + lyrics
This song about a raging animal lust and passion took 3 years to complete. Following up their wildly successful 1983 Pyromania album, the first attempts to record Hysteria were with producer Jim Steinman, but that didn't work out very well - Steinman is the guy who crafted big, orchestral songs like "Total Eclipse Of The Heart" and "Making Love Out Of Nothing At All." Unlike Steinman's compositions, "Animal" won't leave you scratching your head or listening for the string section. It's straight up Rock prod

  • Hysteria *•.»★ Def Leppard + lyrics
Def Leppard bass player Rick Savage came up with a guitar part for this song, and when he took it to their guitarist Phil Collen, Phil had his own idea that they combined to form a melodic guitar sound that formed the basis for this song, which became the title track to the album. With Mutt Lange producing, Def Leppard layered a bunch of guitars on this song, which made it impossible to replicate live. In an interview with Kaos2000 magazine, lead singer Joe Elliott explained: "The song 'Hysteria' has eleven

  • Pour Some Sugar On Me*•.»★ Def Leppard + lyrics
The first record Def Leppard lead singer Joe Elliott bought was "Sugar, Sugar," which was a huge hit for the cartoon band The Archies in 1969. Near the end of that song, there is a line that goes "Pour a little sugar on me, baby," which Elliott says inspired this song. The lyrics are clearly about sex - Elliott says "Pour Some Sugar On Me" is "The metaphor for whatever sexual preference you enjoy" - but they are shrouded in enough metaphors to make the song safe for radio and MTV. Def Leppard, with Mutt Lang

  • Photograph *•.»★Def Leppard + lyrics
1983.The Pyromania album was produced by Mutt Lange, who came up with the line, "All I've got is a photograph." This gave them the idea to write a song about a guy who's crazy about a girl, but all he has of her is a photograph. Lange was so integral to the band's work that he got songwriter credit on the songs he produced. Def Leppard's next album, Hysteria, was also produced by Lange, and it wasn't released until 1987 because they waited until Lange could do it (that and their drummer lost an arm).

  • Knock On Wood *•.»★ Amii Stewart + lyrics
this disco version was a #1 hit in 1979. It was the only hit for Stewart who was also a dancer & actress - she starred in the Broadway musical Bubbling Brown Sugar. The innovative arrangement of her version inspired Jay Graydon's production of The Manhattan Transfer's "The Boy From New York City." Says Graydon: "There was a re-release of 'Knock On Wood' that was fantastic. And some guy played a triplet guitar part in it. I decided to borrow the idea because professionals borrow where amateurs steal. (laughs

Having been brought up on a tasty diet of American gangster movies, the term 'East Side' usually meant the seamy side of a city. Of course, looking back, it was used about New York, not Chicago.
