Autism research on Dateline NBC
I just got done watching this special on Dateline NBC. The special was focus on what are the causes of Autism. The usual suspects came up vaccines, genetics, and environmental causes. The extremely encouraging news I took away from this special was, doctors feel a major breakthrough is very close on the horizon. Doctors are now starting to pay close attention to Autism. Autistic Boy Voted Out of Kindergarten
I was never a big fan of Survivor the reality TV show but to see a version of this played out in a kindergarten class for real is appalling. We all know kids can be cruel sometimes, but what happened to 5-year old Alex Barton was just plain wrong. Aparently last year Alex's kindergarten teacher, Wendy Portillo asked his 5 year old classmates if he was worth keeping in the class given all the disruption Alex caused. He was voted out 14-2. I am encouraged to see stories like this. There are so many adults that have autism that have been ignored, misdiagnosed, or simply forgotten. Twenty years ago there was no focus on Autism and the young kids of that generation were not treated. And without early intervention autism spreads like a wild fire.
