Anderson Cooper schools Palin Spokeswoman
I think it's hysterical how all of her supporters are trying to make this out to be some calculated thought out decision when clearly the Lt. Governor looked like he had no idea this was happening when he woke up this morning and Palin's spokeswoman wasn't even in the state at the time of her press conference. I particularly loved when she continued to use the basketball metaphor after Anderson said he knew nothing about sports. The very purpose of a metaphor is to clarify something by putting it into different context. It just shows that she was not prepared to speak about anything that wasn't on her talking points. It's so refreshing to see that over the past year, we've returned to a form of journalistic integrity where people are asking tough questions, not pulling an punches and aren't lobbing any softballs. Personally, I think she decided to devote more time to watching those sneaky Russians from her backyard. See the resignation highlights below.
Because it's not all gay, all the time...
...and becuase I feel like I haven't really said anything positive about the President lately. I'm sure the right wing nut jobs will say this was a plant or a publicity stunt or whatever. All I can say is that if it is, he sold it a hell of a lot better than Bush's Q&A's where all of the questions were pre-screened.

This issue actually effects me directly given that my father has been battling Multiple Sclerosis for the past decade and was laid off from WAMU last year. Because of a combination of ageism, the recession and his illness, he has not been able to find work and my parents are now spending an ungoldly amount of money insuring themselves independently so that he can get the medication he desperately needs to slow the deterioration caused by his condition. The healthcare industry, and it IS an industry, is deeply flawed and I hope that the President is able to make steps towards actually fixing it as so many have before him.
Dan Savage on takes Obama to task on his LGBT record thus far
Dan, as usual, doesn't pull any punches about Obama's lack of movement on DADT, DOMA and the like, and how he continually passes the buck to Congress. Dan does find a small silver lining to be hopeful about from Monday's event at The White House.
Lt. Colonel Victor Fehrenbach discusses Monday's White House LGBT Event
Alison Stewart was substituting for Rachel Maddow on Monday where she discussed the 40th anniversary of the Stonewall uprising as well as interviewing Lt. Colonel Fehrenbach who was in attendance at the White House LGBT Event earlier that day. While he sounded confident that Obama is indeed committed to ending DADT, his interview seemed tinged with sadness at the expectation that the administration's actions will not come quickly enough for him to be spared being discharged from the military. It's estimated that his case will take another 5 months to conclude and his discharge to go through.
Earlier today, Lt. Dan Choi, lost his battle when a military administrative board recommended he be discharged. He has vowed to appeal.
Gene Simmons says Adam Lambert Should have stayed in the closet
In mid-June, he told a FOX affiliate in Philadelphia:

"Mostly he should shut up about his sexual preferences. We, America, the rest of the world, really don’t care. I mean, if the story becomes ‘I prefer farm animals to,’ you know, who cares? Be quiet about what it is you do indoors and go out there and sing."

Then on June 25th he said the following in an AOL interviewwhen asked why he was talking smack about Adam:

"I don't think I've been talking smack at all. In fact, if anything, I've been soft-peddling. He's enormously talented, best talent 'American Idol' has had, but I think he killed his career because now the conversation is not about his talent but about his sexual preference. He's done. You're forcing people to deal with issues they may not be interested in. Life is unfair, and the masses don't all live in L.A. They live in Wisconsin and Nebraska, and you're on crack if you think the same rules apply there. My advice is still the same, shut the f*** up, just sing and let people say whatever they want. But I do wish him the best because he's got all the talent in the world. If only the world was not homophobic, but it is. I would be the first one to vote for equal rights for gay women and men, and get the church and the state to stop telling everybody how to lead their lives, but do I think he's killed his career? Oh, in an instant. I hope I'm completely wrong. I hope he becomes the next Beatles and proves me wrong."

What Gene and his old generation views about sexuality can't seem to realize is that while Adam has said he has no desire to be a gay role model or a gay rights crusader, he is helping to change people's ideas about gay people by simply living his life in the public eye out of the closet. If the rest of gay Hollywood would do the same, we would certainly have a lot less homophobia in the world. And, while I doubt that Adam is going to be the next McCartney or Lennon, I have no doubt that Gene is completely wrong and Adam will have a f
Broadway Bares 2009
Last weekend, like the previous 5 father's day weekend before, I found myself gluing Swarovski crystal rhinestones onto bras, g-strings, thongs, and other strippable unmentionables in preparation for Broadway Bares. My other half has been involved with designing costumes for the show for the past few years including the ad campaign for the last 2 years. The show is always a blast and a TON of money is raised for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. This year they raised over $800,000 which was quite a feat considering the recession we currently find ourselves in. At anyrate, below is a video of Susan Blackwell backstage at the show provided by Broadway.com
New York State is operating without a government
The 2nd day of extraordinary sessions in the New York State senate started and ended withing the span of a few minutes. The first bill that was to be addressed today was the gay marriage bill and as a result, the 30 Republican State Senators did not show up for work. The Democrats concluded that [...]
White House continues to get hounded about DADT
I have recently started to liken AirAmerica correspondent and frequent Rachel Maddow guest Ana Marie Cox as the Robin to Rachel Maddow’s Batman. They play off of each other very well when it comes to poking fun at political stupidity in all it’s forms. Below are two clips of her question the White House Press Secretary [...]
Dan Savage grades Obama on LGBT issues
I’d fail him as well. I think it’s completely unconcionable that Obama has remained silent about LGBT issues, specifically DADT given his desire to refocus our goals in the middle east. We can’t continue to throw out decorated and competent service men and women like Lt. Dan Choi (see his interview with Rachel Maddow below) who are also Arab linguists that are vital to bringing our involvement in the middle east to a conclusion. I intentionally avoid using the term success because, to me, it has no place in what we are trying to accomplish in the middle east. I think our goal should be to extricate ourselves from this 8 year long quagmire with as little human loss as possible.

Saint Carrie of La Jolla
I've purposefully avoided the whole Carrie Prejean debacle hoping that this ignorant airhead would go away quickly, but I couldn't resist posting this tirade by Keith Olbermann about Saint Carrie of La Jolla.

Pres. Obama and Robert Gates push the DADT repeal “down the road.”
We currently have two wars in the middle east and a severe troop shortage - so much so that we’re now accepting convicts into the military and giving them loaded guns, but repealing DADT has to be pushed down the road because there is too much on President Obama and the Defense Secretary’s plates at the moment. I call bullshit! As much as it pains me to say as I’ve been an Obama supporter since the beginning of his campaign, it sounds like someone has fallen in love with his high approval rating and no longer wants to rock the boat. I’m seriously disappointed.

Tolerance is the new American Value
While I can appreciate the positive outcome of this social experiment and the progressive conclusions that are draw about where the nation is on this, we have to remember that this in a NJ bar that is a stones throw from Manhattan. I imagine that the results would have been very different had they chosen a suburb in a red, southern, fly-over state.

Meghan McCain loves the gays
John McCain’s daughter was on Larry King the other night and I love what she had to say about The Republican Party.

I’m not saying that I’m switching parties by any means, but I hope that this girl continues to be loud about where she thinks her party is and where it should be going. If Republicans have any chance of regaining any seats in the house or the senate at the mid term elections or want to even try to give Barack a run for his money in 4 years, they need to start listening to what this 24 year old has to say. The new Republican Party needs to be fiscally conservative and socially liberal if it ever hopes to be relevant ever again.
