Note Lennon's tag at the end of one sentence here: "or whatever it is." Issues surrounding "religion" are far more complicated than the unlearned need to think they are. Even in Lennon's explanation of his controversial comment (an explanation clearly intended to put out some fires), one finds this telling phrase: "or whatever it is."
