A Science Egg-stravaganza
Students learned how to design an experiment by coming up with several ways to cook an egg to "hard boiled." Then, they compared their methods and the results of the cooking to find out what the best way is to hard boil an egg. Turns out that one large egg should be cooked at medium heat for about 15 minutes with 500mL of water in order to achieve the best hard-boiled egg. Students defined the "best" cooked egg as having a firm and yellow yolk as well as being easy to peel. Coincidentally, students conductCollected in gabudjr's videos Nov 24, 2009 -
LCN Students Thankful for Chemistry
Chemistry students this week paid homage to their favorite ionic compounds. They researched compounds by name or formula to find common uses for their substance. Then, they created a poster that showed what the compound was used for and why they were thankful for it. Who says chemistry isn't important?Collected in gabudjr's videos Nov 24, 2009 -
Camp Cavell
About 80 students and 20 staff went up to Camp Cavell for a great experience together over a couple of days. The weather was unseasonably warm and sunny for November, which allowed plenty of volleyball and other outdoor activities. The group really connected with one another and seemed to get something valuable out of the trip. Team Ohana, with facilitators Jenna & Gary, had an exceptional cast and made a great time of all the activities. Spending this time together in such a setting was a real eye-openCollected in gabudjr's videos Nov 24, 2009 -
Faces: How Come You Haven’t Noticed These Before?
Perspectives & Blinders: Blinders are what prevent you from seeing all of the things around you in your life at any one time. If you let these blinders, which are simply your lack of paying attention, run your life, you will limit your experience in life. You will have "tunnel vision" and only see the things that are right in front of you. Once someone or something points out to you that your blinders are preventing you from seeing something, and the rest of the world is made visible to you. Then, you canCollected in gabudjr's videos Nov 19, 2009 -
Brainiac: Alkali Metals
Alkali Metals, found in column 1 or group 1A, are elements with many of the physical properties common to metals. They are shiny, solid, malleable (shapeable,) and good electrical & heat conductors. Although their densities are lower than those of other metals. Alkali metals have one electron in their valence energy level, which is loosely bound. This gives them the largest atomic radii of the elements in their respective periods (rows.) Their low ionization energies result in their metallic properties anCollected in gabudjr's videos Nov 18, 2009 -
Triboluminescence
Okay, so these people don't exactly know the grammar of our language perfectly (see if you can spot the mistake,) but they do a nice demo of triboluminescence. This phenomena was studied at Mr. Abud's Halloween Glow Show. It is a very simple chemistry principle in action: when electrons inside of atoms get enough energy they "jump up," "fall back down," and give off a flash of light. The science behind it is that electrons exist, and can travel between, different energy levels within an atom. When they arCollected in gabudjr's videos Oct 31, 2009
