Spiritual Preparation, Testing and Discipline With Our Heavenly Destination in Mind
Before moving on to the post proper, let me first apologize for the lack of posts in the past week or so, even though I had initially estimated a posting frequency of two per week, both dealing with theology and Bible study. Having started work, it’s been a little taxing to write well at night, and I don’t think I should waste your time reading posts that are not well thought and/or fleshed out.
What I’ll probably do from now on is to write the couple of posts (or more) on the weekends, then schedule them to be published during the course of the week.
While I can’t write well on week nights, I do spend a good amount of time reading. First off, I’m following a reading plan at Princeton Theological Seminary to read Calvin’s Institutes in a year. The downside is that they don’t keep archives, so if you miss a day you will have missed the schedule. To my chagrin, I didn’t realize that until a day too late, so now I archive the daily posts at a Tumblr I created — calvinsinstitutes.tumblr.com. If you are interested to join the program and have missed the first few posts, feel free to pick up the pace at my Tumblr site.
Still on reading, I’m also working my way through, I think, one of best books from A.W. Tozer — Jesus, Author of Our Faith which a good brother was gracious and kind enough to send to me. I was just reading the portion I’ll be quoting below when I thought, “How apt! This so complements one of the best video sermons I’ve seen in the past few days!” where pastor John Piper reminds us that we must suffer.
First, the quote, then the video:
When the eternal God Himself invites us to prepare ourselves to be with Him throughout the future ages, we can only bow in delight and gratitude, murmuring , “Oh, Lord, may Your will be done in this poor, unworthy life!”
I can only hope you are wise enough , desirous enough and spiritual enough to face up to the truth that every day is another day of spiritual p...

Jeff Noblit: God Helps Those Who CANNOT Help Themselves
Excellent, excellent sermon that’s a must-hear. I heard this when it was first posted up a couple of days ago and knew I just had to share it!
From Lane Chaplin:
“God helps those who help themselves.”
It’s not in the Bible. It’s even anti-Biblical, but, as Ken Jones of the White Horse Inn has pointed out, many “evangelicals” think that it’s in the Bible and, when they find out that it isn’t, they think it should be. Jeff Noblit lays that myth to rest in this sermon.
May it edify you as it
Good Reads {21 November, 2008}
What a week! I’ve been quite busy getting ready for a couple of interviews so when I finally had time to check my Google Reader earlier today, I almost fell off my chair at the sheer number of unread blogs. So I activated my SAR (Search And Retain) sensors and here are what I think are pretty good reads this week:

The One-World Religion Seeks Your Input
From the web site of Charter For Compassion:
The Charter for Compassion is a collaborative effort to build a peaceful and harmonious global community. Bringing together the voices of people from all religions, the Charter seeks to remind the world that while all faiths are not the same, they all share the core principle of compassion and the Golden Rule. The Charter will change the tenor of the conversation around religion. It will be a clarion call to the world.
Clarion call? You bet, though not in the sam
A Beautiful Story That Some Call “Child Abuse”
A sister-in-Christ, Jean, wrote of a beautiful moment in her four-year-old daughter’s life when (Jean believes) the Holy Spirit began a work of regeneration in that precious girl’s life. Alas, such a beautiful account has received more than a ton of flak from many calling it “child abuse”.
If you have the time, drop by Jean’s blog and send her an encouraging note amidst all the hate from the “tolerant” and “open-minded” folks.
Though I doubt if brother Paul himself would call it a prophecy
Do not Worry!
No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money. Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more
Conversations with Paul Washer
The first is a conversation with Paul Washer that will be part of a documentary made at the 2008 Revival Conference (at which he preached the Ten Indictments) sponsored by Sermonindex.net. In the video, brother Paul shares his testimony and his thoughts on the Gospel, revival, missions, and the need for reformation.

The second, a much shorter interview, is taken from an interview conducted by Joe Reilly of CrossReach at the Deeper Conference 2008 in which brother Paul shares his views on evangelism.

I Cannot And Will Not Recant
Since your most serene majesty and your high mightinesses require of me a simple, clear and direct answer, I will give one, and it is this: I can not submit my faith either to the pope or to the council, because it is as clear as noonday that they have fallen into error and even into glaring inconsistency with themselves. If, then, I am not convinced by proof from Holy Scripture, or by cogent reasons, if I am not satisfied by the very text I have cited, and if my judgment is not in this way brought into sub
Thinking About Pop Culture
I have been debating some proponents of the prosperity “gospel” on a local forum and got to know about this particular piece on popular culture written by Kong Hee, the senior pastor at City Harvest Church (a mega church in Singapore) in the church’s quarterly newsletter Harvest Times.
To say that I am saddened and very much worried by what I read in the article would be an understatement, so I’m going to do a rebuttal of the article in response, in the hope that the same young people who have read
Battle Hymn Of The Reformation — A Might Fortress Is Our God
A MIGHTY fortress is our God,
A bulwark never failing;
Our helper he, amid the flood
Of mortal ills prevailing.
For still our ancient foe
Doth seek to work us woe;
His craft and power are great;
And, armed with cruel hate,
On earth is not his equal.
Did we in our own strength confide,
Our striving would be losing,—
Were not the right man on our side,
The man of God’s own choosing.
Dost ask who that may be?
Christ Jesus, it is he,
Lord Sabaoth his name,
From age to age the same,
And he mu

Mary, Queen Of All?
It’s not surprising in these times that “Queen Mary” has been making headlines with more apparitions and the present pope — Benedict XVI — continuing in the heretical devotion to Mary that his predecessor, Pope John Paul II, emphasized. In fact, a cursory look at headlines where the pope mentions Mary tells us that such [...]

Want To Defeat Calvinism? Here’s How!
Are you sick of Calvinism creeping into our orthodox 21st century, contemporary, modern Christian church? Here are some tips and propaganda you’ll find useful to help rid Christendom of the satanic lie of sovereign grace (Calvinism).

You’re Saved Because God Chose You First Not Because You Chose Him First
This is a video follow up to the debate on free-will versus predestination, this time on the issue of salvation.
Many people hold that the reason they are born again is because of something they did. Does the Bible teach this, though? Listen as Mark Kielar explains, Biblically, the order of salvation. Where Are The Real Men?
The recent debate on gender roles, from the Christian perspective, in response to Sarah Palin’s election as the running mate to John McCain gave me much food for thought, especially that of the role of men today.
For awhile now, I have been observing and bemoaning the fact that much of Christendom has been feminized to such an extent that there aren’t many Christian men today whom we can certainly call true leaders both at home and in church.
My point is this: that if Christian women are to be godly wom
