Web Designer/Developer

Vodpod is looking for a web designer and developer; someone who appreciates great design as much as well-crafted CSS and HTML, and who is available to work full-time in our San Francisco office.

Vodpod is the leading video video bookmarking service on the web. Millions of people come to Vodpod every month to find and to watch videos collected by our members. Our tools and services are used by tens of thousands of bloggers and web publishers, including Talking Points Memo, Politico, Time.com, SecondLife.com, and many more.

We're a small but very efficient team -- you'll be our sixth employee. We're funded by TrueVentures (Wordpress, Meebo, Gigaom and others); we're lean, small and cheap, and financially secure.

We're looking for someone who can:

Work with the Vodpod team to design elegant UI for new features, and to refine existing UI.
Turn your designs into functional pages with clean, spare and precise HTML and CSS for use by our web developers.
Help us to dream up new products and services.
Iterate, a lot, and who loves to continuously improve the service.

Qualifications & Skills

In-depth knowledge of and expertise crafting XHTML/CSS
Complete comfort with Photoshop
Strong views about usability and UX -- which web sites or services are good, and why they work
An eye for typography, whitespace, alignments and attention to detail when transforming design into code

Bonus Skills

Knowledge and experience with Javascript
Flash and Actionscript development

Having a strong portfolio, and demonstrable experience, that illustrates your craft and your talents and skills is critical. We want to see work you've done.

Web Developer

We are looking for great web developers to add to our team. You must have some experience building dynamic web apps. This could be from a job, a side project, or an open source project. The web developer position touches on all aspects of the Vodpod service, from front-end pages to back-end database tuning and scaling our service (memcache, replication, varnish and such). We put an emphasis on web development because building good pages with CSS, DHTML, and Javascript is at the core of what we do.

Here are some of the things we look for:

Experience with Ruby on Rails
If not Rails, then experience with another dynamic language, like PHP or Python. We don't really do Java here.
Good knowledge of the browser: CSS, advanced Javascript, use of JS libraries like Prototype, Scriptaculous, and jQuery.
MySQL experience.
General LAMP (LAMR?) stack experience.

Bonus points for:

Good design skills
Photoshop-fu

We particularly look for strong problem-solving skills. If I ask you to build a full-text search function for our site, can you do it in 3 hours? If the first implementation isn't flexible enough, can you get Lucene hooked up in 2 days? And if the results need some tweaking, can you hack the Lucene source to fix the results in 2 more days? This is the kind of challenge we face every week at Vodpod (except the Java part, that is exceedingly rare).

Location

Vodpod has headquarters in downtown San Francisco. However, we are perfectly happy to consider candidates who want to work remotely from somewhere else. We already have remote team members. Our only requirement is that employees are available on IRC doing working hours.
