How to connect Laptop to Television?
Tired of finding ways to connect your laptop to TV? There are several ways to turn a big-screen TV into your new computer monitor and enjoy video games, web content, and photos like never before. Check out this Howto video from Howcast for details:

How To Connect Your Laptop To Your Television on Howcast
For some older Televisions, you may want to buy S-Video to RCA Video Adapter cable which will allow you connect a regular RCA cable to the video pin (Yellow) on your laptop.  Because they don't have any S-Video input.  But all latest television provide you many options to connect various peripheral devices.  See the image.
You can buy one of these adapters off e-bay for a dollar.  But they come in very handy.  Once you have connected the cables, then you need to just press the combination of "Fn+F8" or "Fn+F4" or something like that to transfer the video output of you laptop to your TV.
Remember, you will only see video on the TV, but the audio will be coming from your laptop only.
Let us know in comments how did you find this information.  I am sure lot many of you have been wondering how to connect laptop to television.  But now you know... ;)
Use Pockets to leave a Private Voicemail to anyone on Twitter
Many times you want to talk to someone Twitter but you don’t have his/her phone number.  Pockets comes in handy at that time which lets you leave a private voicemail to anyone on Twitter.
Using pockets is really very easy.  For example if you want to leave me a voicemail, follow the steps as mentioned below:

Visit http://www.Pocketsapp.com.
Enter recipients twitter name, e.g. mine is “@technomania”.
Hit ‘Send Voicemail’.
Pocketsapp will ask for permission to access your Twitter account using Twitter OAuth.
Once allowed, Pocketsapp will ask you to enter your phone number.
As soon as you enter your phone number, Pocketsapp will call you so that you can leave a voicemail to the recipient you entered in step 2.
That’s it.  Pocketsapp will leave a @reply to the recipient which he/she can access by Twitter OAuth access to pocketsapp.

To see it live, check out the embedded screencast video below: (URL)

As you would be guessing, this service could be used to spam Twitter users.  But as long as people maintain sanity, Pocketsapp is a service you MUST use when you need to get in touch with someone you know on Twitter but don’t have his/her contact info.

Some Suggestions for the Pocketsapp team:

One thing which Pocketsapp can do to improve the user authenticity and to reduce spam is by verifying the phone number added to the service.
Replace the ‘Sign in’ button on top with ‘Sign in with Twitter’.
Check if both have a mutual relationship on twitter.  (May be that was left intentionally.  But it may reduce spam.  What if someone I have blocked tries to leave me a voicemail.  What if a advertiser starts sending voicemail to everyone on his list whether or not they follow him back.)
Let the user enter more than one phone number or at least a temporary accessible number.

Homework for you

Let us know in comments how did you like the service and if you happen to use it, how and why did you use it for?  Why don’t you start b
Web Server Technology explained – How two computers talk on the internet?
You can break the two types of computers used for the internet. There are the users/clients and there are the servers. The internet is a massive collection of computers that have basically agreed, through specialized software, to communicate and share data together. The primary user interface software is your internet browser.

To put it simple, there is typically a client who is requesting information from another computer and that other computer is the "server" which is holding the information. The server will simply take the request and send back a set of code that the client’s web browser reads and the web browser will take the information from the server and paste it onto the users/clients computer screen.
There is a vast amount of technical information that one may or may not know when it comes to the data sharing but the easiest way to understand the internet is to look at it as if a computer acts like a telephone and with your computer you are calling someone to get the necessary information. That person tells you the information; a server then sends it to you via a computer and some software.

Does a server look like my laptop?

A server could be a laptop but generally speaking it is not a laptop that is hosting the information, or site, that you are requesting. In many cases it could be a large cabinet looking device holding vast amount of storage space that is storing untold numbers of sites owned and maintained by various people. In some cases it could be a server on the other side of the world.
Given the vastness and power of the internet network it has made the planet "flat" again and brought the possibility of a single free market to a reality. Your computer will take the web address you type into your browser and turn it into what is called an IP address, somewhat like a phone number.
It then takes that number and takes it through a large international network that utilizes satellites, tracking down the computer/server that is hosting or holdi

Incredible Music Instruments : Creativity at its Best
First watch the videos below and then read the commentary:

What if I tell you that these videos are the hard work of very talented group of people.  People who spent over 13000 hours of assembling, arranging, calibrating the farm equipments like Pipe, Hoses etc. to create this astonishing music arrangement.

You would believe me for a minute and will be surprised what creative minds can do. Here is another one:

But, I am sorry to say, this is a Prank which is being circulated in email as attachment.  Though it is true no Iowa engineer worked on any music instrument like this, yet a different set of talented people at Animusic created this masterpiece.  The prank email says something like this:
This incredible machine was built as a collaborative effort between the Robert M. Trammell Music Conservatory and the Sharon Wick School of Engineering at the University of Iowa. Amazingly, 97% of the machines components came from John Deere Industries and Irrigation Equipment of Bancroft Iowa. Yes farm equipment!

It took the team a combined 13,029 hours of set-up, alignment, Calibration and tuning before filming this video but as you can see it was WELL worth the effort.

It is now on display in the Matthew Gerhard Alumni Hall at the University and is already slated to be donated to the Smithsonian.
A similar email, I received yesterday.  Obviously I did some research to find out the truth.  Surprisingly, there is no Music Conservatory by that name in University of Iowa.  For more details read this article...

Well, this incredible music instrument is a collaborative efforts of engineers using 3D computer graphics, animation and digital synchronization. You can get this music videos yourself from Animusic site and use them to impress others.  There is even a screen saver available for download to be used on Windows PCs.

Other than that you can subscribe to Animusic Video Podcast in iTunes or in a RSS reader.  You may want to look at other Youtube videos f

SugarSync – A Revolutionary Backup Service
Many services came and go claiming to be the best backup service.  But recently I have been using SugarSync which I must say is a revolutionary backup service.
There is no device it doesn’t support, be it Windows PC, Mac, iPhone, Blackberry, Windows Mobile or even Android.  I am sure they might have plans to support Linux too.
What else can you expect from any back up service.  When you sign-up you get 2GB of FREE space for your files.  If you want you can buy more space on a monthly basis.

SugarSync have a decent iPhone app which lets you share and backup files on the Go.  You can even stream music if you want, share your photos instantly with your friends on Facebook and take a backup at the same time.
What else you can expect, check out the below slideshow:

Sugar Sync
View more presentations from Anurag Bansal.

For argument sake though, the minimum rate plan is $4.99 per month or $49.99 annually for 30GB space.  Can’t I just get an external hard drive of 500GB or 1TB space for less than a $100 just for back up purpose without paying a monthly rate to SugarSync.  Why would anyone like to upgrade to such a costly plan just for back up purpose.
Other argument is, generally all the digital things I do these days are already on someone’s server.  Be it photos (Picasa or Flickr), video (YouTube or Vimeo), document (Google Docs or Zoho). Then what I am left with on my machine is just some software files or something like that.  All important data is already backed up.
Then why would I need a service like SugarSync.  But that’s just my thinking.  Your purpose might be different.
You can give it a try at least for getting FREE 2GB space online which you can use to share files with your friends.

The applications vary from music players, browser, photo management, disc burning tools and email clients etc etc.  The list just goes on and on..
As you can guess, being an open source, you have limitless options for any particular application.  As Linux is becoming popular day by day, more and more applications are being developed to satisfy the growing needs of the users and the community.
Before you start reading this post further I would just you to please read "20 things to do after installing Ubuntu Linux" to get the bare minimum applications and plug-ins for your Ubuntu installation and then come back here to read more.

Mozilla Firefox and Opera Browser: Mozilla Firefox is the default browser for Ubuntu users.  No doubt it is the best browser in the world, and with amazing list of add-ons it just becomes irreplaceable.  Even then I would recommend you to give Opera browser a try. I have found Opera being faster than Firefox sometimes.  Download and install Opera from here.

Enhancements

WINE: Sometimes people refer WINE as a Windows Emulator but it is not an emulator.  In official terms, Wine is translation layer which is capable of running Windows applications.  Though not all applications can be installed using WINE, yet it is the best choice for some Windows only software to run under Ubuntu.  Learn more about WINE at http://www.windhq.com.

How to type in Hindi & other Indian languages on any website
Didn't you anytime wanted to reply to someone in Hindi? Because the respondent likes to read Hindi transcript rather than the 'Hindi written in English'.For instance, instead of writing "Mujhe pata hai ki tumhe Hindi mein type karna nahin aata hai", wouldn't you rather prefer "मुझे पता है तुम्हे हिंदी में type करना नहीं आता है." Right.(For those who don't understand hindi, it means - "I know, you don't know how to type in Hindi.")Don't worry. I have found an easy solution for you. With this solution you would be able to type in Hindi, Kannada, Tamil, Telgu, Malayalam and Arabic. Here is the step by step guide for you. I am writing this guide for Hindi but the steps remain same for any other language too. This process doesn't require to install any software or add-on. It just works with a shortcut, known as Bookmarklet, provided by Google.Transliteration Bookmarklet is a small piece of code that you store in your browser. Once stored, you can type in Hindi in any text box on any web-site of your choice. It works on any web-sites.For example, you can use the bookmarklet to chat in Hindi in Gmail, send messages in Hindi to your friends on networking web-sites like Facebook and Orkut etc, or edit a Hindi Wikipedia article or even write a blog post in Hindi.FYI, you don't need to follow this guide if you are using Gmail, Orkut, Blogger, Knol or any other iGoogle gadget. As Transliteration is built-in on these sites.--Google CodeSteps:In your browser, just drag and drop this link [अ Type in Hindi] in your 'Bookmarks Toolbar' or Favorite bar. (You may right-click on the link and select 'Bookmark this link' to create a Bookmark as well. The steps might be a little different for Firefox, Internet Explorer, Google Chrome and Safari. After creating the bookmarklet, follow these steps to type in Hindi on any web-site:Click on the bookmarklet you created in first step.
CardStar iPhone App reduces your wallet and keychain weight
CardStar – an iPhone apps which lets you reduce some weight out of your wallet and the key chain you have been carrying around for a long time.CardStar lets you create virtual Merchant Tags with Barcodes that you can scan at the time of check-out.  Cool, huh…. And the best thing, it is FREE for a limited time (generally costs $0.99).  Here is the iTunes link for CardStar. Once you have installed the application on your iPhone, just click on the ‘+’ sign to start adding all your merchant cards to it.  Check out the below screen cast to see how it works.  You just search the merchant in the directly filtered with categories and enter the number below the barcode on your physical card.  CardStar will create a exact same barcode for you.  This barcode you may scan at the time of check out.And if you don’t find the merchant in the list, you may add one yourself.  But for now, the merchant list of over 130 companies in 6 categories (Drug Store, Entertainment, Grocery, Gym, Retail and Travel) is there.  So there is a very high possibility you will find most of the popular ones.Best thing, once you have added the card, you don’t need any internet connection for this application to work.  I will say it is one of the must have app in iTunes Store.  Download and install it right away.  You won’t need to carry those membership and reward cards anymore as long as you have your iPhone.Enjoy and let me know how this thing works for you.  How it helped your shopping experience?Technorati Tags: CardStar,iPhone,Apps,Apple
Posterous Reviewed, my 10 Suggestions to the team
Want to start a blog, but don't know how to create one.  Worry not, just send an email to post@posterous.com and your new blog is live.  Can anything be simpler than that?  I guess not.
Now you ask about pictures, videos, links and all, Posterous has you covered there too.  If you send multiple photos as attachment, they will be converted into an album.  Video links from Youtube and Vimeo etc. will be converted to video embeds, you don't even have to lift a finger.

What else do you want?  In my opinion, if you want something extra, then you are going to make it complicated.  More about it later though.
Posterous makes it even easier to cross post to various other online destinations like Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Flickr, Youtube etc.  And you can even import your blogs from other services like Blogger, Wordpress, Tumblr etc.
Posterous is Pixelpipe for Blogging text, pictures and video etc.
Now in fact, the service is still new and the team is rolling out updates quickly.  But I have some suggestions for the team.  I hope the team will take a look and if possible include the changes in future updates:

More control over Crossposting - Most of the times I don't want to post it to all the services I authorised in my account.  And if it gets cross-posted everywhere, it creates noise.  However I know I could use the specific email address for this purpose.
I hope while using the bookmarklet, it gives me a checkbox to selectively auto cross-post.
Post by web doesn't make any sense if it opens an email application anyway.  I would love to see an online editor where I can write a blog post directly on Posterous.  The web editor I see while editing the posts.
Make it easier to explore other blogs and subscribe to them.  If possible, make it easier to search other blogs by tags etc.
Managing the site -

I can't delete couple of posts simultaneously.
Managing post submission - Submitted post should be segregated so that I can selectively approve them.
