Mandores and Mandorism. A system whose time is up!
Who is a Mandore? Historically, a Mandore was a supervisor in the rubber estates, whose role was to ensure the estate bosses got their work done by the Indian rubber tapper – the daily paid wage workers. Besides just supervising to get the job done these Mandores also had the role of goading the workers on, on unpopular policies. They resorted to manipulation, force and deceit, in many cases to do this. Then, when dissatisfaction brewed and the workers began to speak out they also played the role of the spy for the master – telling on trouble makers. In many of these situations they connived with their masters because of their understanding of the nuances of the tappers lives and communities. The master for his part always remained in the background. He used many ruthless schemes to maximize his personal gains from the background. He skillfully used his Mandore to be his fall guy. In return for the fronting he did for the master, these Mandores enjoyed a few more perks in life. The master gave a very small portion of truly what should all have gone to the tappers, to the Mandores and set off with the rest. Those tidbits gave the Mandores a status that they strutted while the master got the large chunk of the value that was created by the tappers. The master got off with the loot. The Mandores got a few crumbs and was always humming and hawing for more. The tappers got the short end of the stick. That was the process of yore, devised by the plantation owners of those days to ensure they got the maximum possible yields. They allowed only enough to be paid to the tapper and his families’ subsistence , some toddy and maybe a little for his festivals, but not more. Then the white masters left and the brown and yellow tuans took over in the 1960s. This system remained and evolved. What started as a system for maximizing the profits in the plantations became in time a system for subjugating the Indian poor to maximize the returns for the tuans in the economy as a

Justice for Kugan petition to DYMM YDP Agong 26/09/09 - what I observed
This is what I observed at the peaceful assembly in front of the Istana Negara on 26 September 2009, which was called by Hindraf and the Human Rights Party Malaysia to deliver a petition to the the DYMM Yang Di-Pertuan Agong. The petition, which you can download and read here, pleads to the YDP Agong for justice for Kugan and his family. Eight months after his death in police custody, the killer/s of A. Kugan, have yet to be arrested and brought to justice.I tried to get to the Istana Negara at about 10.30 a.m., but there was a police roadblock where Jalan Dewan Bahasa joins Jalan Istana, and the police were not allowing any cars to get past. I made some calls and found out that the petitioners were meeting at Naga's Restaurant in Brickfields, which is where I headed to. Members of Kugan's family were already there, including Madam Indra (his mother), sister, brothers and uncle. With them were a small group of Hindraf and MHRP folks; MP for Kapar YB S Manikavasagam, MP for Puchong YB Gobind Singh Deo, and ADUN for Kota Shah Alam YB M. Manoharan were also there. Soon, Human Rights Party Malaysia pro-tem secretary-general P. Uthayakumar and Hindraf coordinator Mr. Jayathas arrived, and the group organised themselves for the trip to the istana. Some of Kugan's family members waiting for transport to the Istana I hitched a ride in one of the cars carrying some of Kugan's relatives. We set of towards the Istana, but somehow got separated from the lead cars. We parked before the roadblock at Jln Dewan Bahasa, and began walking towards the Istana proper. Members of the police manning the roadblock blocked our way and told us that we could not pass. The police stop us from proceeding We told them that we were going to deliver a petition to the Istana, and that Kugan's relatives were with us. The policeman asked us to wait while he radioed his superiors for permission. He took an inordinate amount of time doing this. Asking for instructions, or delaying tactics? After
Malaysiakini threatened under three Malaysian Prime Ministers
PETALING JAYA, 11 Sept 2009: The Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission (MCMC)'s investigation of Malaysiakini this week is not the first time the online news site has been harassed or threatened by the state. In fact, Malaysiakini has experienced harassment and received threats from state agencies and government leaders under the previous administration of Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, and now, under Datuk Seri Najib Razak. Screencap of Malaysiakini.com "Press freedom hasn't improved a lot over the last 10 years," said Malaysiakini editor-in-chief Steven Gan in a phone interview with The Nut Graph. The news site turns 10 years old this year. "The government has a long track record of muzzling the [traditional] media. They have the mindset that they want to clamp down on us. Although there is the 'no censorship' pledge for online media, the mindset is still the same." Last week, the MCMC directed Malaysiakini to remove two video reports from its site and from YouTube. The first video showed the 28 Aug 2009 cow-head protest in Shah Alam where the protestors threatened bloodshed if a Hindu temple was relocated to their neighbourhood. The second video was of Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein's 2 Sept press conference where he defended the cow-head protestors. MCMC officers questioned Malaysiakini staff for eight hours on 8 Sept on the two videos. Seven members of the MCMC visited Malaysiakini again on 10 Sept and demanded for the original tapes of the recording of the event. They also asked to copy the hard disks of two computers that were used to upload the videos. The current investigation is under Sections 211 and 233 of the Communication and Multimedia Act 1998 which prohibits the provision of content which is "indecent, obscene, false, menacing or offensive in character with intent to annoy, abuse, threaten or harass any person." No stranger to harassment The Fairly Current Show inter
Altanthuya Ghost emerges again!!!
RPK renews attacks over Altantuya allegations on Youtube KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 10 — After absconding from his sedition and criminal defamation trials, fugitive blogger Raja Petra Kamarudin appears to have begun his own defence through the first in a series of video interviews of him on the Internet. RPK has renewed his online offensive against Najib and Rosmah with a series of interviews on Youtube. — File picture by Choo Choy May Hosted on Youtube, RPK, as he is popularly known, renewed his attacks against the police and the Attorney-General for deciding to prosecute him over allegations he made regarding the prime minister and his wife’s involvement in the murder of Altantuya Shaariibuu. He also compared his case to the vigour shown in the investigation of alleged corruption by the Selangor Pakatan Rakyat (PR) government. “The government raids the offices of a Selangor exco based just on Internet reports. Somebody publishes a story accusing an exco member of taking money and they raid the office. “The source of the information and the allegation is anonymous but it is enough for government to spring into action,” he said in the short video clip of just over six minutes. Speaking about his own troubles with the government, he pointed out that he did not make an anonymous declaration about the Altantuya murder, but signed a statutory declaration. The allegations have been dismissed a number of times by Najib. Altantuya, a mistress of the PM’s former associate, was killed in late 2006, and her body blown to bits with explosives in a secondary jungle area just outside the city. The former associate of Najib, Razak Baginda, was acquitted of conspiracy to murder. Two policemen were found guilty of the sensational crime. Although he provided no concrete evidence, RPK’s allegations had fed roiling speculation surrounding the murder. In his video interview posted today, RPK spoke of a conspiracy and selective prosecution by the authorities. “I didn
