MAKE IT COUNT - CHAPTER 2 "WATER"
MAKE IT COUNT - CHAPTER 2 "WATER"

The first incarnation of Element came in the form of a small collaborative, East Coast company called Underworld Element. Most often referred to as Underworld, the company was inspired by the hip-hop movement and used a mixture of urban styles and reflected a raw and controversial vibe.

Soon after its inception, Underworld was plagued with many challenges, and the business began to collapse. Its original crew had all moved on, and Johnny was left with two choices: either turn the struggling brand around, or abandon Underworld altogether and start something entirely new.

MAKE IT COUNT is a four-part documentary, which showcases Element’s defining moments and delves into its compelling story. From its humble beginnings, to a forward thinking global brand, this film covers two decades of stories and imagery.

In creating Chapter 2 of 4, "WATER" Kirk Dianda (director) interviewed Johnny Schillereff (Element founder & president), Andy Howell (New Deal co-founder & Underworld founder), and a small cast of influential characters. Through their interviews, Underworld's inception and demise is explained, along with a historical look into a unique era within skateboarding.

Cover creation on Vimeo
After working on the latest cover for Macworld Magazine I wanted to show what is involved in making a cover. I focused on the three main areas: the photography, photoshop and design. I chose a time lapse format to convey lots of information in a small amount of time. The only drawback of time lapse is that since half a day goes by in 30 seconds, the whole process seam so easy! Lots of details were left out of the design process (like the cover meetings and rounds of layout options). I began to photograph the design process after the layouts had already been narrowed down to just three cover designs.

On the technical side, for the time lapse video, I used the Canon 5D Mark II with a 24mm-70mm zoom. I chose the 5D because of its great image quality with high ISO's. Canon's sRAW1 gave me the flexibility of a RAW file with the file size of a jpeg. The actual Macworld cover was taken with a Phase One P65+ digital back attached to a 4x5 Sinar X camera with a 65mm lens.

Many thanks to Rob Schultz for allowing me to invade his office and literally shoot over his shoulder.

MAKE IT COUNT - CHAPTER 1 "WIND"
MAKE IT COUNT - CHAPTER 1 "WIND"

MAKE IT COUNT is a four-part documentary, which showcases Element’s defining moments and delves into its compelling story. From its humble beginnings, to a forward thinking global brand, this film covers two decades of stories and imagery.

In creating Chapter 1 of 4, "WIND" Kirk Dianda (director) followed Johnny Schillereff (Element founder & president) and dug into his history, interviewing the very people that have shaped his life and the company. The opening and closing sequences give you a small taste of the diverse community of people interviewed for the entire project, topics covered, and nostalgia that was un-earthed.

Each chapter of MAKE IT COUNT will be release on the 1st of each month:

WIND - August 1st, 2009

WATER - September 1st, 2009

FIRE - October 1st, 2009

EARTH - November 1st, 2009

VIDEOGRASSaturdays Webisode 6: Darrell Mathes and friends at High Cascade on Vimeo
Last week Videograss' Darrell Mathes and Andreas Wiig hosted a signature session up at High Cascade Snowboard Camp. The park setup was amazing, and the new rope tow made for an insane number of laps. Along with Darrell and Andreas; Jon Kooley, Jordan Mendenhall, Will Tuddenham, Ben Bogart, and Cale Zima jumped in on this edit for some good times. If you're sitting around wondering what to do with your summer, there is still room at HCSC. Beg your parents to sign you up for this magical camp! Meanwhile, be sure to check out highcascade.com.
