Haiti earthquake survivors scavenge for food
AlJazeera : Additional police and troops are being sent to Haiti to bolster security amid relief efforts in the wake of last weeks deadly earthquake. For many earthquake victims, even six days after the disaster, the story is still one of frustration as aid is only slowly getting through. While at the airport the debate rages over the prioritising of military flights over civilian aid flights, in makeshift relief camps some earthquake victims are going hungry while others are fighting for food. Haiti Earthquake: Léogane worst affected city
United Nations : United Nations, New York, 18 January 2010 - Just 20 miles west of the capital, the city of Leogane with a population of approximately 134,000 was one of the worst affected by last week's devastating earthquake. Initial estimates indicate that 80 to 90 percent of the buildings were heavily damaged. The World Food Programme (WFP) is implementing distribution of high energy biscuits to 50,000 people in Leogane as well as Cité Soleil, Carrefour, Place Boyer, Champ de Mars and Jacmel. AlJazeera : Thousands of US troops have arrived on the island, trying to offer security and distribute what humanitarian aid there is. And the UN Security Council is expected to approve the deployment of 3,500 extra UN troops. But critics say before more security forces arrive, it is medical equipment, nurses and doctors that need to be allowed access to the country if aid efforts can really begin to reach those most in need.
