2009 White House Correspondents' Dinner
REMARKS BY THE PRESIDENT AT WHITE HOUSE CORRESPONDENTS' ASSOCIATION DINNER May 9, 2009 Washington Hilton Washington, D.C. 9:56 P.M. EDT THE PRESIDENT:  Thank you.  Thank you, everybody.  Good evening.  You know, I had an entire speech prepared for this wonderful occasion, but now that I'm here I think I'm going to try something a little different.  Tonight I want to speak from the heart.  I'm going to speak off the cuff.  (Teleprompters rise.)  (Laughter and applause.)  Good evening.  (Laughter.)  Pause for laughter.  (Laughter.)  Wait a minute, this may not be working as well as I -- (laughter.)  Let me try that again.  Good evening, everybody.  (Applause.)  I would like to welcome you all to the 10-day anniversary of my first 100 days.  (Laughter.)  I am Barack Obama.  Most of you covered me.  All of you voted for me.  (Laughter and applause.)  Apologies to the Fox table.  (Laughter.)  They're -- where are they?  I have to confess I really did not want to be here tonight, but I knew I had to come -- just one more problem that I've inherited from George W. Bush.  (Laughter.)  But now that I'm here, it's great to be here.  It's great to see all of you.  Michelle Obama is here, the First Lady of the United States.  (Applause.)  Hasn't she been an outstanding First Lady?  (Applause.)  She's even begun to bridge the differences that have divided us for so long, because no matter which party you belong to we can all agree that Michelle has the right to bare arms.  (Laughter and applause.) Now Sasha and Malia aren't here tonight because they're grounded.  You can't just take Air Force One on a joy ride to Manhattan.  (Laughter.)  I don't care whose kids you are.  (Laughter.)  We've been setting some ground rules here.  They're starting to get a little carried away.  Now, speaking -- when I think about children obviously I think about Michelle and it reminds me that tomorrow is Mother's Day.  Happy Mother's Day to all the mothe
Navy SEALs Parachute into St. Louis | April 22, 2009
The Navy SEALs were in St. Louis during St. Louis Navy Week, April 16-April 26. Throughout the week they were scheduled to make eleven parachute jumps, however due to weather conditions they were only able to make three successful jumps. A former Marine, J.C. Chandler who now works in St. Louis, Missouri put together this awesome footage of one of the three successful jumps that took place on April 22, 2009 with the LeapFrogs jumping right over the Gateway Arch and landing on Lenore K. Sullivan Boulevard located on the bank of the Mississippi River. Lt. Cmdr. Garrett Kasper did a phenomenal job of coordinating St. Louis Navy Week events, and brought this video to my attention. He was so right - this footage captures an historic perspective of St. Louis that will hopefully be seen hundreds of thousands of times online on YouTube. Joe Biden can explain the surge. Why can't John McCain or Sarah Palin?
With ten days remaining to choose between Barack Obama or John McCain to become president, which of these two candidates will best represent the commander-in-chief of America's interests in the world? Senator Biden, the Democratic vice-presidential running mate of Barack Obama appeared on NBC's Meet the Press last month, and was questioned by Tom Brokaw about the surge in Iraq and the economic bailout. He spoke in great detail and depth. Senator Biden seems to know more about John McCain's position on the war in Iraq than does Senator McCain's vice presidential running mate, Sarah Palin. Have you ever seen Sarah Palin discuss the war in Iraq like this? Link to video Let me put it this way. After consulting with their respective running mates, whose judgment would you trust more? Biden on the Economy
George Stephanopoulos discusses his exclusive, first post-election interview with Vice President-elect Joe Biden.
Son, is Basic Training at Camp Granada?
"This place is everything I dreamed. Love, Son." These words written in a letter home would warm any mother's heart. So why do I find these words so not right? Well, for starters, he's not writing home from college, or while on vacation in some popular tourist venue. He is writing me for the first time from Military Basic Training. My son, who has lived away from home before, knows his mom worries. I was always asking "are you eating properly" or "do you need anything, like sheets or blankets, toiletries, etc." Suffice it to say, the proverbial Letter Home I was anxiously waiting for arrived, although I must confess it was not anything I had envisioned it would be. Essentially, I received a four-page form letter informing me what not to send, where to send, who to call, who not to call, and when to call. If his first direct order was told to write home to let his family know how he was doing, and had to do it in 100 words or less, he passed that test hands down. His comments to me managed to allay any and all apprehension or fear I may have had as his mother, and he did so in 30 words or less. I couldn't help but think of the vintage comedy song Allan Sherman wrote going back to the sixties, "Camp Granada", humorously depicting their young son's thoughts written in his letter home from summer camp. Watch and listen below. Needless to say, I now know where to send correspondence to my son. It will take him longer to read the letters I will be sending to him, I am sure. That's alright. I wrote every single letter with all of the unconditional love this Mom has for her son. Expressions of John McCain
US Republican presidential nominee Senator John McCain (R-AZ) reacts to almost heading the wrong way off the stage after shaking hands with Democratic presidential nominee Senator Barack Obama (D-IL) at the conclusion of the final presidential debate at Hofstra University in Hempstead, New York, October 15, 2008. Photo: REUTERS/Jim Bourg While John McCain's constant blinking annoys me more often than not, take a look at the expression on John McCain's face when Obama tells "Joe the Plumber" that his fine (for not providing health coverage for his employees) will be "zero". Sarah Palin on Sarah Palin
Keeping with my PBS theme today, I couldn't help but to share this little video of Governor Sarah Palin. Back in October of last year, long before Senator McCain chose the Alaskan Governor to join him at the hip, she appeared with her then-competition (unbeknownst at the time that she was, in fact, in competition for the No. 2 spot), Governor Janet Napolitano on Charlie Rose. Sarah relates to, or rather she talks to us "middle-class folk" who she seems to mistakenly forget to address, or at least verbally acknowledge while she is out there on the campaign trail. The viewer gets some plain, old common facts about Sarah Palin, straight out of the horse's mouth. Here's a brief teaser: you'll never believe what her first job was, and how that job enables her to relate so well to us middle-class folk, today. She also shares with us who gave her the best advice she ever received. Fast-forwarding to today, she clues us in on what she thinks is the greatest challenge facing the next generation. All of that is summed up in four minutes, with a little extra topic query that was sure to have caught the attention of Wasilla's librarian at the time of the interview. Link to video Charlie Rose Green Room with Sarah Palin, October 12, 2007 Senator Joe Biden (D-DE), is Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and ranking member of the Senate Judiciary Committee. He is also the Democratic Party and Barack Obama's Vice-Presidential running mate. Senator Biden and Governor Palin will make their mark in history later this week when they debate each other on Thursday, October 2, 2007 in St. Louis, Missouri. Some are saying this night will be the most anticipated, historic debate since Richard Nixon and John Kennedy debated. FOX News Sunday looking to replace Bill Kristol?
William Kristol, Op-Ed Columnist and editor of The Weekly Standard may have made his last appearance as a FOX News contributor. One would think, after his uncharacteristic-like performance on "FOX News Sunday with Chris Wallace" yesterday, throwing the entire McCain campaign under the proverbial bus. Within hours of his most recent article, Fire the Campaign appearing in Sunday's New York Times, Kristol, in less than two minutes, essentially raised the "white flag" (maybe the one that Sarah Palin referred to during the recent Vice-Presidential debate), calling the current campaign "stupid," "pathetic," and "flailing", further pointing out that they are "out of sync with their own candidate, now." Watching the completely unintelligible segment of bickering that preceded the panel discussion between David Axelrod and Rick Davis must have been too much for the renowned FOX contributor. While McCain's GOP allies also expressed their discontent, Tucker Bounds, McCain campaign spokesman responded to Kristol's attacks, saying that he doesn't think what Bill had to say was "very intelligent." Kristol defended his position and remarks, reiterating another point he made earlier in the day, asking"Why isn't Sarah Palin on this morning, instead of Rick Davis?" The jaw-dropping moment for me: "I can understand Senator Obama, quite correctly, saying, 'Hey, whats going on here? He [McCain] won't say this to me, and his campaign is saying it in ads.'" Host, Chris Wallace, appearing to be stunned and at a complete loss for words, merely responded with:"that is such pure reason on the part of Bill Kristol, we're going to end this panel on that subject. You said it all, what can I say, Bill." Link to video: Fire the Campaign By William Kristol, Op-Ed Columnist, NYTimes.com Published: October 12, 2008 It’s time for John McCain to fire his campaign. He has nothing to lose. His campaign is totally overmatched by Obama’s. The Obama team is well organized, flush with resour
