RIKEA
Firenze, Italia - During the Festival della Creativitá, I was fortunate enough to learn about some interesting projects that I think are worth knowing about, discussing, and sharing. One of these projects, known as 'rikea' is the work of Marco Lampugnani and Antonio Scarponi. The project won an honorable mention award at the 4th International Architectural Biennale in Rotterdam, where it is on display until January of 2010.

'Rikea' is a prototype for a micro urban structure that conceives the free market Balon (Turin, Italy), as a system of 'instant urbanization'. The project was prototyped together with IKEA and Italcementi. It consists of tiles for the recognition of the merchants’ position on the public space where it is possible to install elements of the system 'broder' produced by IKEA in order to support temporary shelters. The re-use of the foldable sofa 'svingen' (IKEA) is adapted to realize a trolley for goods delivery. (© mlampu & conceptualdevices)

Rikea is a project by Marco Lampugnani (www.mlampu.eu) and Antonio Scarponi (www.conceptualdevices.com).

RIKEA is part of a project involved in Torino Geodesign (promoted by architectural magazine ABITARE and Torino World Design Capital), an experiment in democratic design.
RIKEA has been conceived and realized by Marco Lampugnani and Antonio Scarponi together with Balon's community (Turin, Italy) and IKEA, as a self-made, foldable market cart.
It mixes-hybridizes former IKEA products (such as beds, shelves, bags etc) to obtain a brand new - more complex - object. (YouTube mlampu)

A huge thanks to Marco Lampugnani for providing images and text.
As you travel on, don't forget to innovate, create, and discover.
Come'é Bella la Cittá
After arriving back from Italy, I once again find myself longing to return. For some reason, I don't quite feel as though I am quite home until I am back in Florence. I suppose it will eventually pass. But after a 9.5 hour flight from Frankfurt, I not only was able to think over about the past two weeks in Florence, but I also caught a nasty cold. So the results of being stuck at home for a week, finding little entertainment value on the tube, and having quite some free time - I decided to take a couple of hours to put together a little something to remind myself of the amazing time I had at the Festival della Creativita' 2009. Because as Giorgio Gaber put it - "Come'é Bella la Cittá, come'é grande la cittá"

For those of you who will celebrate in tonight's festivities, have a wonderful and safe Halloween and don't forget that even with a costume, you can always travel on.
Festival della Creativita'
Firenze, Italia -  It has been an absolutely fantastic experience being among such interesting and talented individuals the past two weeks. I not only was able to make new friends and connect with individuals but also was able to be a part of something big something beyond myself. The Festival della Creativita' was filled with everything one could imagine: food, art, wine, technology, politics, relgion, you name it - it was there.

With the other individuals in our group, coming from South America, North America, Europe, Australia, and South Africa - we attended various workshops and conferences that offered us a plethora of information - and offered me a new idea as to how I view Florence and Tuscany.

The first thing that comes to most of our minds when someone says Florence or Tuscany is the impressive dome of Brunelleschi, hillsides riddled with sunflowers, and hilltop castled towns. While all of these are important and essential to the history and culture of Tuscany, it doesn't define it. For me the Festival della Creativita' defines what it means to be from Tuscany, from Italy, and from a globalized world.

There was so much to see - Robots playing soccer, sensors that will facilitate in waiting rooms and playgrounds, flight simulators, new designs for parks, eco-friendly cars. After gaining information about social media and the impact it has in our globalized world - the group experienced something new and exciting with a session in Rugby and Team Coaching.

I can't even begin to explain all that was at the festival - food, a skate tournament, art, architecture - everything that makes society was on display. All I can do is post a few pictures, give you a few links, and maybe include some video. But in the end you need to be there to experience it. And from my experience, my beliefs have been supported that there is much more to Tuscany than just hillsides and beautiful architecture. There is a story that has been writte

Sights Smells and Sounds I
San Francisco, California - Just a taste of our afternoon in San Francisco. I absolutely love how there is constant music wherever you walk. The sounds and sights of San Francisco make me smile. An afternoon of fun can definitely be had, even if you're on a how-will-I-ever-pay-rent-broke-college-student budget. A picture really is worth a thousand words; I think these sum up nicely our afternoon.
