[App Star Awards ★] Tips & Tools to create a perfect iPhone app video demo
If you want to apply to the App Star Awards and get a chance to a major exposure, the only thing you will have to do is publish a video demo of your upcoming app. Doing a good video demo is easy when you have the right tools. We're going to share some of them with you.It sounds like an obvious thing to do, but we still see a lots of developers that do not understand the necessity of doing some pre-App Store marketing and a video demo is a key element to tease on your upcoming beauty.
One tip: we engage you to check out on youtube the endless demos of apps made and see how those were made. It will give you a pretty good idea of what can be done. So what do you need?Key ingredientsAn app (hard without it...)Some time (30min to 1hour)A computer or a camera (although you can do without it) A video editing toolThe Computer-less approachPrinciple: you shoot a live demo from your iPhone with a camera Good example: The spotify teaser below, which is awesome You'll need to have your app prototype installed locally on your iPhoneA good camera. Make sure you can shoot in zoom mode clearlyMake sure the iPhone is stable put on a clear background If possible, make sure that the hand playing with the app is not the one handling the camera (meaning your camera on a tripod)Advantage of this approach: it is the kind of real life show that can really seduce. But you need to make sure to have good shooting conditions. Also ideal for apps that require an external accessory (eg a bluetooth accessory) The Computer based approachPrinciple: you run here a demo of a simulation of your app on your computer Good example: Here is a demo by Tweetie. See? You need some tool like iSimulate (not free) or Simfinger - free  (see how the creator of Tweetie is using it) There is also a nice javascript tool that gives you a Virtual iPhone interface on your browserYou can also use PhoneFinger which provides a nice simulation environment for demos You need a good Screencapture tool to shoot/edit you

Joe Hewitt, ex-Facebook iphone app creator, on the App Store app discovery [video]
via gigaom.com
Joe has created one of the most popular iPhone app. He just decided not to pursue this app because he's against Apple app review process and approach. Fine. Someone else is taking the lead. It is probably a big deal for a complex app like Facebook. I am sure Apple will improve it over time.
But in this video interview at the very end (jump to 8min) he says something highly interesting about the App discovery issue.
"I hope Apple is goingt to come with some solution for app discovery. If not Apple then some sort of third party infrastructure..."
Joe [smile!] welcome to Appsfire

DJ player app: interview with a frustrated developer
We spotted a few weeks ago what looks like an awesome DJ app to mix your music. We discovered yesterday on ReadWriteWeb that this app, along with other DJ iphone apps are not being approved by Apple and that they created a petition to raise awareness around their situation [signed so far by 308 persons]
The problem is that their app has been in Apple's hands for months without very clear reason.
We reached out to one of the developers Aviv Eyal to understand better the case.
We all know there is heat around the app store, because the App-roval process could easily be improved and become more efficient and transparent. In that respect Aviv has some good suggestions at the end of the interview.
Let's hope this app get approved soon, because it really looks like a a cool one.
----------
What is your app and what does it do?
My company Musicsoft Arts is developing next-generation media players and music mixers for the iPhone platform. We've developed a unique audio mixing engine that is going to empower several new music Apps. Our first App, DJ Spooky The Secret Song is already available in the App store today and is getting good initial reviews and sales.
The App allows you to listen to a mix or mix yourself a selection of exclusive remixes from DJ Spooky new album. It is the first App for the iPhone that allows you to truly mix 2 stereo audio files with stereo sound effects. DJ Player 1.0 is the first App built with our audio technology that allows anyone to easily play a smooth mix of his songs with one touch or to interactively mix his tracks using a mixer. This is ideal to play at a party as people already have their iPhone or iPod Touch with them.
You can just plug-in to the Stereo system and perform a great sounding mix. DJ Player replaces complex, heavy and expensive equipment and software that requires a strong laptop. DJ Player 2.0 is already in the works and it provides a revolutionary visual mixing interface that allows you to beat-match between trac

2 cool translation apps:Translate what you read / Translate what you say
2 cool new apps if you need to translate somethingPic translator, translate what you read (say a menu in a restaurant abroad). Shoot a text, send, get the translation back. Jibbigo translate what you say (in English-Spanish for now). Say something in english, send, get the voice translation back. The only problem i see with those kind of translation apps is the cost: no so much the cost of the apps (Jibbigo is not cheap btw) but the cost of usage. Both need to forward a file to the web and send back to you something translated (text or voice). Most of the time you need those apps abroad where roaming fees can kill your bank account (eg: 30 dollars for a few mBs) So, you need to be extra careful when using them.

★★★★★

"Calling all Appers, West Coast, East coast Appers... Gangsta Appers...
Worlwide Appers This is the everyday story, of a Rapstar to an App Star. Here we go, yo... I tried to be a famous rapper 'cause I thought that's where the cash is, But I couldn't keep it real it just felt like I was acting. No illing and maxing, I was chillin and relaxing, These Apps, and they got me distracted. I played Flightplan(tm) its plane amazing, yo I loved it. But my iphone landed in the bath and kinda snuffed it. iFart(tm) was the bomb til I tried it under water, Now I'm back on my old 2-way, got a 3GS on order. With Foursquare(tm), I followed where Redman was headed, And I battled him, well I tweeted him... I think he read it. Biters beware: retweet my raps and get beheaded, Rakim loves my technique, I gotta ping him - "don't sweat it". Nas gonna be mad, Kelis will jock me for sure, I'll get more game than The Game, I'll Amp Up Before I Score(tm) I'm gonna kick in the door... Of my local Apple Store, Rocking Biggie playlists, I got from Spotify(tm) before. Yo this rap is like an invite, designed to get you psyched! Now its time to go clock the App Star Award Site. Get the jist of my rapping? You better get your App in, By December 9th, 2009 -- its when it happens!!"

Not App related: but the new magic mouse is a masterpiece (watch video demo)
via youtube.com
if you missed it, Apple just announced a few new products including a new generation of multi-touch mouse. iPhone owners will understand the power of that new tool http://www.apple.com/magicmouse/
Note also the change of name from Mighty Mouse, since they lost their trademark over a legal dispute

WaveBoard pushes Google Wave in an iPhone app (we have Wave invites btw)
We were waiting for it. There you go. It was first a desktop client. The iPhone app is now available on getAp.ps/fy

unfortunately it's not a free app (no doubt it will be soon...).

If you want a free alternative try the Safari based version. But mind the speed

Now if you ask me the Mockup of this virtual app made by Mockapp looks a little better. But it is just a mockup

PS: oh want an invite to wave? we have a few. drop a comment with your email

[We love it!] Mouthoff - to impress your friends with your mouth (Must try)
One of the amazing things with the iPhone is the type of new usage you can generate with something that originally is just a phone. Ocarina is one of those examples. We recently stumbled upon Mouthoff, by usTwo (who has other cool apps too), a super cool app that has for only purpose to replace your mouth while you speak. There is not much to it.   They packaged that in a cool website spreading some marketing magic on it with their competition. A nice example of how exhibition can become a social glue.  When self expression meets funDownload and impress your friends here (free app / paid app with more options here) Follow them on twitter
