Creator Bryan Lee O’Malley Talks the Future of Scott Pilgrim
Last weekend, Bryan Lee O’Malley sat down with writer Joshua Dysart (Unknown Soldier) at the West Hollywood Book Fair to talk about all things Scott Pilgrim – the next (and last) book, the movie starring Michael Cera and directed by Shaun of the Dead’s Edgar Wright, and even the side-scrolling video game set to [...]
Long Beach Comic-Con 2009 Bloom County panel with Berkeley Breathed
If you missed the 1st annual Long Beach Comic-Con, you missed getting a chance to meet one of the most talented strippers of our time… ummm, by that I mean comic strip creator. Berkeley Breathed is the man behind Bloom County and everyone’s favorite neurotic cartoon penguin Opus. He spoke to a [...]
Star Wars Clone Wars Season 2 Premieres on Cartoon Network 8pm Friday
The 2nd season of Star Wars: the Clone Wars animated series on Cartoon Network premieres tonight at 8pm. This 1 hour episode features the new bounty hunter character Cad Bane causing more trouble for our favorite Jedi. Of course, Darth Sidious is behind it all as usual.
While the original movie wasn’t as [...]
Barrymore’s WHIP IT Has Lots of Hurl Power!
You ever get jealous of those little kids with wheels in their sneakers? Or just annoyed? Well, I’m part of the former group. I loved rollerskating as a kid and even in my small town, I was lucky because we had two to choose from when it came to putting 8 [...]
ET Has Exclusive IRON MAN 2 Set Visit Footage
After you suffer through the usual Entertainment Tonight talking heads chattering about the cast’s fashion and workout regimens, there isn’t a whole lot new here in this video beyond some behind-the-scenes stunt work. Admittedly, ET really isn’t on the air for geeks like you and me. It’s a celebrity news chaser for [...]
Microsoft Introduces a Really Sexy PC Tablet… errr, Booklet…
Warning: I’m about to say something incredibly positive about Microsoft. Assuming it’s OS isn’t based on any currently existing in the Microsoft oeuvre (I’d be willing to provide a hands-on examination of the Courier just to make sure), this Courier looks astoundingly intuitive and functional in ways I’ve only dreamed about in a [...]
All of the LOST Comic-Con 2009 Panel Videos
Okay, it’s a little late to be posting videos from Comic-Con 2009, but it’s still a little early to start speculating on Lost’s final season (who am I kidding? It’s never too early!). Comic-Con gave us lots of goodies to ponder back in July, including a number of very strange tv commercials [...]
Comic-Con 2009 Wrap Up with Iron Man 2 Panel Video
Yeah, yeah, I know. It’s taken me forever to actually post something since preview night, but I really think that my pictures speak for themselves. In the last few weeks, even before Comic-Con opened its doors, we’ve been in the process of re-imagining and re-designing the popculturegeek site with a re-focused purpose. [...]
Comic-Con 2009 Preview Night with Seth Rogen’s Car
Madness abounds at Comic-Con this year. Yes, the Twilight fans were already in line for the Twilight panel more than 24 hours before it’s scheduled to begin. Hey nerds! You’ve just been out-geeked by a bunch of horny teenage girls and their moms! Take THAT!
The hallway in which [...]
Getting Ready for Comic-Con 2009 – Follow Our Every Step on Twitter!
We’re just hours away from the yearly geeky mecca, San Diego Comic-Con 2009! We’ve been quiet on posting the last few weeks preparing for this big event. I’m sure you heard the news on a few other sites… Michael Jackson apparently died, Ryan Reynolds is Green Lantern, Walter Cronkite died, Natalie Portman [...]
Buffy the Vampire Slayer Vs Edward the Slayer Stalker Twilight Remix
This just made my day, possibly my year. No, I don’t have an unrelenting hate for Twilight like some, but there are times when it’s hard to like it (I can still hear echoes of the brain-piercing screams from the fangirls at last year’s Comic-Con panel). Geeks love seeing worlds (copyrighted properties) [...]
San Diego Convention Ctr Making More Room for Geeks
I know this isn’t the sexiest, most cutting edge pop culture news, but to a geek like me (and maybe a geek like you), this is pretty important. As you likely know, the San Diego Comic-Con International convention is Mecca for geeks from around the world. Each year, Comic-Con is held at [...]
E3 Expo 2009 – Let There Be Rock! New Video from the Event
I’m still working on a number of video compilations from this year’s E3 event, but man, it’s taking awhile to be somewhat creative with my editing. I tried to make one long video of clips from everything, but that would have gone on for hours. Then I tried to create a video [...]
E3 Expo 2009 - Lurking the Halls as they Setup
E3 has returned not only to the LA Convention Center, but it has also returned to its roots! (okay, it was there last year too, but it sucked)
E3 was always known as the big, noisy, glizty monstrosity for the video game and electronics entertainment world, calling industry insiders, investors, and of course media [...]
New Buffy Movie without Whedon or Gellar? Blasphemy!
Buffy is about to face yet another apocalypse. This time, possibly without Joss Whedon, Sarah Michelle Gellar, or anyone else from the much beloved TV cast. Who would dare commit such a crime against nature… errr, fandom? Who is this dark harbinger of doom? His name is Roy. Roy [...]
The Visitors Are Our Friends - ABC’s V Trailer and Footage!
Growing up, “V” was one of my all time favorite shows. When it came to sci-fi tv, I was all over stuff like “V“, Battlestar Galactica, the Greatest American Hero, and, of course, the classic original series Star Trek reruns. Friendly aliens visit Earth in cool giant spaceships, promising great things and [...]
Friendly aliens visit Earth in cool giant spaceships, promising great things and monumental change for the world. But not really. They turn out to be… well, if you have never heard of “V” (really? you consider yourself a geek?), I won’t ruin it. But the trailer below for the new ABC series just might spoil it a little. I like the fact that this version of “V” digs a little further into religious themes and the ideas behind blind devotion without discernment. This could end up being pretty fun and thinky. But the fact that it stars the stunning Elizabeth Mitchell (Lost) and Morena Baccarin (Firefly/Serenity) is enough to keep my interest even if it didn’t appear to be smart (and did I happen to catch a glimpse of Alan Tudyk in there? AlphaWash gets around… hmmm…). Here’s hoping that ABC has found a new sci-fi series with staying power now that we’re less than a year away from the end of Lost. Notice how even the title at the end of the trailer looks kind of Lost-y? And could another wild-animal-named Party of Five vet (Scott Wolf) take over the male lead in the smart ABC sci-fi epic spot once Matthew Fox steps down at the end of Lost? And, ummm, Juliet, anyone? No surprise which audience they want to pull.
I have a strong feeling that ABC will be handing out those “I ♥ V” t-shirts at Comic-Con this year… (they should fire their marketing promotions person if they don’t).
PaleyFest 2009 Dr Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog Screening
A few nights ago I got to see Dr Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog in a way I never imagined when the web miniseries debuted last year: I saw it on the big screen at the Arclight Cinerama Dome on Sunset Blvd in Hollywood. The sold out room enthusiastically sang along (and some quietly to themselves), but never so loud as to overpower the incredible sound in that classic yet modern technology enhanced theater. After the screening was over, TV Guide.com’s Matt Roush introduced the cast and creators of the award winning series: Joss Whedon, Nathan Fillion (Captain Hammer), Felicia Day (Penny), Zack Whedon, Jed Whedon, and Maurissa Tancharoen (becoming Mrs Jed Whedon today as I write this). Dr Horrible himself, Neil Patrick Harris, couldn’t be there that night as he was out of the country, but his absense just gave Nathan Fillion free reign to make fun of him without any immediate consequences.
Among the information shared:

They talk about making a sequel all the time, especially while shooting Dollhouse, but there is currently nothing concrete at the moment. It would require everyone the freedom from work that they had during the writers’ strike.
Even if they can’t make a sequel on the same scale as the original, they’re considering all mediums… movies, Broadway, maybe even puppets! (not really)
They’ve already made a few web comics with Dark Horse Comics on Myspace, featuring Captain Hammer, Moist, and coming soon… Penny! Maybe even one with Dr Horrible (go figure).

Lots more can be seen and heard on the videos I captured at the event. Yes, the quality is crap. I dropped my camera a few weeks ago and it’s had nothing but problems ever since. But it’s the audio that matters, so sit back, close your eyes, and listen to the bits I was able to capture. Or you could go to the official Paley Center site to catch some better quality video from that night. Here’s hoping they decide to package up the whole evening on DVD as they have with other Pal
Angel Star Andy Hallett aka Lorne Dies of Heart Failure at 33
We here at popculturegeek are nothing if not big Whedonverse fans. And the thing that makes every Whedon project great are the characters and the actors who bring those characters to life. So it’s with a heavy heart that I share the news that Angel actor Andy Hallett, best known as Lorne, the green-skinned demon with serious singing skills, has passed away at age 33 after a 5 year battle against congestive heart disease, according to Entertainment Weekly. Andy was a huge talent as an actor, forced to be taken seriously (when he wasn’t being funny) under layers of green makeup, horns, and suits that were the only thing louder than his tremendous voice. I was never lucky enough to meet the man in person, but from everyone I know who had and from hearing testimonies from those who worked with him, he and his golden voice will be greatly missed. Condolences go out to his friends and family and fans around the world.
