This protest represented a culmination of labor and community support of the members of UE Local 1110 who decided to occupy the Republic Windows and Doors plant because they were being laid off without legal notice or severance.

    When the workers at Republic Windows and Doors -- in Chicago, USA -- were notified their factory would close in three days, they took matters into their own hands. The unionised workers seized control of the factory for six days to demand the entitlements they were owed by law. They also demanded that Bank of America, which was ``bailed out'' with taxpayers' money just weeks before, make funds available to the company to pay the workers.     Thousands of unionists and supporters rallied at the St Kilda Road headquarters of the Australian Building and Construction Commission, demanding its abolition and celebrating the dropping of charges against union official Noel Washington, who had been facng a jail term for refusing to attend a hearing of the commission. The rally heard from a succession of speakers and ended with thunderous chants, captured here by a still camera - hence the low resolution.
