2012: when the world blows up and a moose farts
Roland Emmerich has done it again: hired 800 cgi artists to blow up the earth and recorded a moose farting to play consistently over the trailer.

Seriously, what is that groaning sound? It makes me wish the world was ending.

And don't planes fly up? Why not go OVER the collapsing buildings rather than try to thread the needle between two of them as they implode?
Second Official Trailer for Scorsese's Shutter Island looks great!
Shutter Island looks amazing! Scorsese returns to Cape Fear territory (one of the inmates even looks like a younger DeNiro, upon first glance) with an incredible cast and production values.  Click on the image to go to the trailer...

Can't wait for this as I'm currently reading the book by Dennis Lehane (great so far; I'm almost to the end of Act 2B, in script terms.)

Btw, Lehane's narrative is split into 4 perfect acts -- Story Map, anyone?

The only problem is we're going to have to wait until 2010 to see it.  Paramount pushed the release back from its initial December slot because they claimed they couldn't afford the $75 million it would take to properly market it as an Oscar contender.

Two questions:

1) Whatchu talkin' bout, Willis?!

2) Why the frick does it take $75 mil to make the academy aware of a movie that has an amazing Oscar pedigree?

Hurry Shutter Island release date.

Dan.

p.s. Titanic was on tv yesterday and I watched a few minutes -- seen it lately? Leo looks like he's 14!  Looking at him now...shouldn't he look younger?  Maybe it's all the cigarettes and wealth.

Extract -- not so much about a guy losing his testicle
I've read Mike Judge's screenplay for Extract, his new comedy opening today, and I was surprisingly disappointed. I'm a big Office Space fan and I've liked all his other output, from Beavis & Butthead to King of the Hill to Idiocracy (liked, didn't love Idiocracy; don't agree with its rabid fans that it's a "classic") and even his early Milton shorts.

I really wanted to love the Extract script but it fell short for me, primarily in the main way that comedies can fail: it just didn't make me laugh more than a couple times. It should be said that maybe I read an early draft so I'm not trying to condemn it; I'm personally not a fan of  "script reviews" that treat a draft of the screenplay as if it was a finished film.

But reviews suggest that my script draft is very close to the film, so I'm holding out hope that the film is funnier than the script.  I'm still rooting for Judge, and I love the cast he's assembled.

MILD SPOILERS

For those who've read the script, there's two things that jump out...

a) The bones of the story are very similar to Office Space: guy frustrated with work and his love life undergoes an accidental transforming experience (in Extract, he does drugs and blacks out; in Office Space, Peter is hypnotized but the hypnotist dies before he can wake Peter from his trance) and makes irrational acts which end up launching a chain of events that lead to chaos and increasing stakes yet ultimately, redemption and happiness.

b) The catalyst of the script is the main character hires a young gigolo to seduce his wife, so that he can then go ahead and sleep with his young, sexy employee that has been flirting with him.  The story is more about that, then it is about the guy who gets his nut blown off in an accident in the protagonist's factory.

But the ad campaign focuses on the nut, even going so far as to feature only walnuts on the teaser poster!

The trailers don't even mention the gigolo story engine (which is the funniest element of t

Mad Men 3.3: Roger goes blackface, Joan rocks the accordion, Peggy gets high and Sally Draper continues on the road to prison
Sally Draper: Future Criminal.

Is there any doubt now?

She drinks, smokes, lies, and now steals money from family members.

Okay, it was only 5 bucks, but still, her road to ruin is clear and has been well-documented.

And we've got a police cruiser showing up at the Draper household next week, as Sally deviously pets a stuffed animal on the porch.

With murder in her eyes.

Yes, it's clear, and I'll be the first to say it...

Little SallyDraper is going to kill Grandpa Gene.

Just look at this monster-in-the-wings...

[/caption]

The only question now is how?  Let us know your theory in the comments below.

But she's not the only character this week who lapsed into Holy Shit Land.

We'll get to Roger Sterling in blackface in a minute.

Apparently, Paul Kinsey's college buddy ("Princeton, class of '55") is none other than Patrick Bateman of American Psycho fame...

[/caption]

But I guess I'm not the only guy to notice the resemblance, like the actor himself, Miles Fisher, who produced his own music video in which he plays Christian Bale and re-enacts scenes from American Psycho!

(btw, that video is not safe for work)

So did the producers give the actor the greenlight to just "do Patrick Bateman" in the episode?  I wonder.

Oddly, Miles Fisher (he gained fame doing the impression of Tom Cruise and his Scientology rant) is not listed in the imdb cast list for this episode; maybe because he is actually an axe murderer in real life.

No, that's Sally Draper.  But I digress.

The POINT is...his character Jeffrey delivered some mary-jane to Paul and Smitty and they smoked it up (in big-headed Harry Crane's office?) and then were joined by...Peggy.

Peggy getting high and then putting her new, matriarchal secretary in her place...just continued Peggy's ascent to awesomeness.

But who wants to see Peggy and Smitty get together? How cute would they be as a couple?

They're about the same size, and he's already a beatnik and she's obviously willing to go there

Story Maps: writing the GREAT screenplay|e-book coming soon
Dear writer,

I'm hard at work preparing my e-book for distribution, and I plan to use this blog, my Facebook page, new Youtube videos and soon even that kooky site all the kids are using these days - Twitter I believe it's called? - to roll out the book so I can reach the most screenwriters possible.

There's 12,876 books on screenwriting out there (I counted), and no, you don't need another one, but...I promise you need this one!

That doesn't even make sense.  But it comes from the heart.  And it's all I got right now.

Actually, I got tons more for ya's that I'll be posting here soon.

So please stay tuned.  I'm working on it.

I'm really excited about plugging into the social media universe and meeting all of you.  It's going to be a lot of fun as we analyze, discuss, argue, and rave about our mutual passion: movies.  (with some TV, books and pop culture thrown in to keep it interesting)

For now, I'll leave you with this: the teaser trailer for James Cameron's Avatar.  Because last time I checked...

Jimmy Cameroony*+ corny story + incredible fx = HUGE MOVIE.

Right, Twentieth Century Fox? (sweaty crickets)

That's an example of major studio mockery (msm), btw, something else we'll be doing up in this.

Good luck and happy writing,

Dan.

*we're good like that, Jimmy and I.
