If anyone in your family has had colon cancer, take the age they were when they were diagnosed, subtract 10 years, and that’s the age at which you should have a colonoscopy. Mom was 50, and so being 40, I had my first colonoscopy this year, besides, all of my coolest friends (Paul, Jeb, Sonny) were having them, and I’m not one to be left out. Here’s how it went for me. If I can get through it, then anyone can:
Thursday:
Breakfast is the last meal I’ll have for over 24 hours. At 9AM, I had mixed fruit with yogurt, cottage cheese, and granola, and since I knew it would be a while until my next meal, I felt a rice krispy treat was also in order. An hour or so later, the hunger kicks in, and it has to be quelled with clear liquids only, and juices without pulp until Thursday night. I definitely felt the absence of solid food, and learned that when I get a specific gurgle on my left side, under my ribcage, it’s time for a game of iPhone Scrabble in the “throne room.” When I got home, Sam was having our favorite Chinese chicken salad, and I would have killed for even a taste of the Styrofoam container it was in. But I had bigger plans. I was to take my first dose of MoviPrep, a pre-exam solution that gets its name either because everything moves, or because it’s good prep if you’re going to be in a porn movie. Maybe both. Either way, it tastes like lemon-lime crystal lite made with sea water. Icy cold, or even on the rocks is better than room temperature because you’re going to be drinking a quarter-liter every fifteen minutes for an hour. It starts to work in about 20 minutes. If you live with others, for their sake, please crank up the tunes. At few points in one’s life are the ramifications of one’s dietary choices more apparent or the reasons for making resolutions more clear. We’ll leave it at that. Provided you started a couple of hours before bed, you can feel pretty secure about bedding down...

“Pride goeth before the fall” may be the mantra soon plaguing the misguided marketing team behind Gatorade, launching this lame ad campaign trying to re-brand the time-honored sports beverage as “just G”.
Or is it just a big inside joke being played out on us consumers?
Don’t they know that club kids often mix the street drug GHB with Gatorade?  It’s a problem among bodybuilders too.  Just last week, in the Philadelphia suburb of Falls Township, a bodybuilder was accused of giving GHB-laced Gatorade to a co-worker at the gym where he worked:
[GHB] is often ingested by bodybuilders to calm down after a strenuous workout. Police say it is also used as a so-called date rape drug, because it puts users into a deep sleep.
Krueger, who worked in the sales department of the club and was not a bodybuilder, did not use the drug, prosecutors said. Schwendiman allegedly offered Krueger a sip of GHB-laced Gatorade while the two men were at work but did not tell him what it was. A witness told the grand jury that Schwendiman told the victim “trust me, you’ll like it.”
Several hours later, prosecutors said, Schwendiman dropped Krueger off at a hospital emergency room, where he was pronounced dead. When questioned by the grand jury, Schwendiman allegedly denied using GHB and giving it to Krueger.
All these bad associations, plus this lame re-branding? I for one ain’t drinking the Gatorade any more. Besides, there’s newer (and more efficient) electrolyte replacement technology, such as Enlyten’s SportStrips. When placed between your cheek and gums, these tiny strips (which look like breath strips) deliver electrolytes through buccal absorption.Similar Posts:

THIS IS THE FIRST ENTRY OF “MY FAVORITE 3 WEB DISCOVERIES” — A NEW WEEKLY COLUMN. Articles, websites, videos, contests, applications, pictures … you get it.  If you’ve seen something already, my apologies, sometimes I’m a little slow.
My favorite discovery this week was Ice Blink, a documentary about the Martin family, whose cruising lifestyle has potentially transforming lessons for urban types.

I caught Ice Blink tonight on PBS and was incredibly inspired by the story of the Martin family. If you are interested in lifestyle design (or re-design), then I recommend this 1-hour documentary. It’s now airing on PBS (check your local showtimes) but you can also buy the film on DVD directly from the family.

Because of Resolution #2, I’ve necessarily been approaching different ways of to getting a handle on my daily nutrition. To lose a pound of body fat per week by June 20, I need to shave 800 calories off my daily 3,800 caloric number.
Today, my friend Eric told me about MyNetDiary which easily tracks your nutrition, with easily navigated pages free from banner ads, for about $5 a month. They make an integrated iPhone application that syncs with your online diary automatically, too.
