Uniting Church president, Rev Gregor Henderson, said he is distressed that the Fijian military and police have been intimidating Methodist Church ministers, and have announced the Government [...]

Day 7: A Call To Action
Since his release from detention last Friday, Rev Lasaro’s residence at Nawanawa  in Suva had been inundated with constant streams of relatives, members of the Church, Church Ministers and visitors to wish him well and express their support.
Rev Lasaro was detained by Police last week in relation to the Church’s call for the return of the Nation to constitutionalism and the rule of law, the reinstatement of basic human rights, and a return to democracy through early elections as a means to relieve the people of the poverty and hardships now endemic in Fiji. In a radio message broadcast in the Methodist Church “Raici Jisu Matua” programme last night, Rev Lasaro had expressed his gratitude for the very strong support both locally and internationally, that he and the Church had received.
Meanwhile, in a Church service broadcast Fiji-wide from Suva’s Centenary Church last night, the Rev Tomasi Kanailagi, a past President of the Church, had made a stand and had sent a clear message to the congregation and a direct challenge to the Bainimarama junta that as the Church that first brought the light of Christianity to Fiji, coming at a time of cannibalism and heathen worship, so many of its early missionaries have suffered and some have made the ultimate sacrifice to bring God’s word of love, redemption, peace and civilization to Fiji.
Similarly, Methodist Ministers now stand ready to lay down their lives if necessary for their belief to ensure peace, the rule of law and God’s justice in Fiji, social justice and the relief of the people from the oppression of the current regime, and their emancipation from poverty and hardship.
It is expected that Rev Kanailagi will be picked up for detention by Police for his fiery sermon which has clearly breached the emergency decree.

Day 5: NAGGING ISSUES THAT WIL NOT GO AWAY
We are informed that Friday night was early to sleep for devout Methodists who have heard of Rev Lasaro’s detainment. After burning the midnight oil in prayers, meditation and in telephone discussions of options to be taken, the news of Rev Lasaro’s release proved to be an anticlimax. While it provided the opportunity for much needed rest and sleep, the dawn of Saturday morning however came with the realization that the nagging social, political and economic issues in Fiji will just not go away- that 40% of our people are below the poverty line and the figures are steadily increasing, that parents are finding it increasingly difficult to put food on the table, to send children to school, that there are no foreign investments, the policies of the Bainimarama junta is isolating the nation, increased food prices through devaluation, has put thousands out of employment and deprived God’s people of their sources of livelihood , that young lives are being lost to immoral activities to make ends meet, and the detention of a Man of God who had stood up for God’s justice is a direct affront to the rule of law, the Church, to freedom of belief and expression.
Under these circumstances, leaders of the Church would do well to meditate and remind themselves that holistic mission should involve both evangelism and social action; that the Church’s concern for the justification of sinners cannot be divorced from the provision for the needy and advocacy for the freedom of the oppressed, that the work of the Church in saving souls must go hand in hand with the freedom of conscience of people to choose their leaders, that redemption and providence should go with protecting the dignity of people made in God’s image through holding government accountable for any breaches of their rights to be free from arbitrary arrest and detention of the sort which Rev Lasaro had just been subjected to.
The support for the Church in the long run now depends on the choices of those in lea
Day 4:The Church Grows Through The Blood Of Its Martyrs
A Tribute To Rev Lasaro’s Courage
While most of Fiji enjoyed the comforts of sleep last night, the respected and elderly Rev Manasa Lasaro was languishing like a common criminal in a cold, dark cell at the Totogo Police Station in Suva, carrying his cross for the stance the Methodist Church had consistently taken for justice, the rule of law, and an early return to democracy as a means to alleviate the hardship and poverty now so prevalent in Fiji
. As a leader in the Church, Rev Lasaro stands out for his dedication to God, his outspokenness, decisive action and control which he had used for the good of so many individuals, families, the Church, community and the nation. True, while being carried away with the nationalistic sentiments of 1987, his actions, like those of so many others were dictated by the pressures of those moments. However, the consistent position of the Methodist Church since December 2006 gives Fiji hope that most have learnt from the mistake of supporting coups and the poverty and despotic tyrants they produce.
Under current circumstances, while some have preferred appeasement and downplayed their prophetic responsibilities in the face of oppression and tyranny, Rev Lasaro had shown that regardless of personal consequences, obedience to God’s calling has to be reflected with instincts that are consistent with God’s will.
With his responsibility for building a Christian nation, Rev Lasaro has been forthright and truly prophetic in pointing out to the Bainimarama junta the need to comply with the rule of law, the April 09 ruling of the Appeals Court, and the importance of human dignity through the need to restore basic rights and freedoms.
That he is now personally paying the price for the stance of the Methodist Church is a rallying point for others who will soon make their stand for peace, democracy and freedom of worship, human rights, and the rul

Fiji Times editor, Netani Rika, says censorship means major events go unreported

Rowan Callick, Asia-Pacific editor | May 08, 2009

Article from:  The Australian

THE editor of the Fiji Times newspaper, Netani Rika, has spoken out for the first time about how major events go unreported because of military censorship imposed in the Pacific nation.
Mr Rika spoke at a UNESCO workshop in Samoa planned originally for Fiji’s capital, Suva.
It was moved to Apia, said Susuve Laumaea, the Papua New Guinean chairman of joint organiser the Pacific Freedom Forum, because it would have been impossible to hold it in Fiji. Mr Rika, whose newspaper is owned by News Ltd, also owner of The Australian, would not have been permitted to make his speech in his home country following last month’s abrogation of the Fiji constitution and the continuing state of emergency under Prime Minister and 2006 coup leader Frank Bainimarama.
“Basically, any story on government must put the interim regime in a positive light or it will not be permitted, even if balance is provided in the form of a comment from a minister or senior public servant,” Mr Rika said.
He said that after April 10, when the constitution was abrogated, judges were sacked and the military government was reappointed until at least September 2014, media organisations were told each would be allotted a censor accompanied by a plainclothes police officer.
“We were not told from whom the censor would need protection,” he said. “The number of censors and of police officers has increased. In Fiji, it is often the case that rules can change from day to day without warning or explanation.”
The Fiji Times Sunday edition published following the imposition of censorship carried white space in place of stories culled by the censors, and was now a collectors’ item, Mr Rika said.
“It was a sensation and drove home to the people of Fiji the point that we were powerless to tell the truth, to tell the country what it needed to know.”
But the newspaper’s management was told by the Government’s inf

The Formal Announcement
PRESS STATEMENT
2 May 2009
Statement by Forum Chair on suspension of the Fiji military regime from the Pacific Islands Forum
The Chair of the Pacific Islands Forum and Premier of Niue, the Hon. Toke Talagi MP, has announced that the military regime of Fiji has been suspended from the Forum.
“It is with considerable sorrow and disappointment that I confirm the suspension of the current military regime in the Republic of the Fiji Islands, from full participation in the Pacific Islands Forum, with immediate effect from 2 May 2009.”
Hon. Talagi added: “This difficult decision, agreed unanimously between all Forum leaders at our Retreat in Port Moresby on 27 January 2009, responds to Commodore Bainimarama’s failure to address constructively by 1 May 2009 the expectations of Forum Leaders to return Fiji to democratic governance in an acceptable time-frame, in addition to responding to a range of other concerns (the Port Moresby Leaders’ Retreat Decisions are attached). It is also particularly timely given the recent disturbing deterioration of the political, legal and human rights situation in Fiji since 10 April 2009.”
“These measures respond directly to the confirmation by the military regime in Fiji, particularly through its recent actions, that it rejects fundamental Forum obligations and core principles, as outlined in the Biketawa Declaration and other key guiding documents of the Forum. Reflecting on the Leaders Vision Statement of 2004, this involves cooperation through the Forum to create a Pacific region respected for the quality of its governance, the sustainable management of its resources, the full observance of democratic values and for its defence and promotion of human rights.”
The Forum Chair confirmed: “This decision does not amount to the expulsion of Fiji, as a nation, from its membership of the Forum. That proposition has not been considered by Leaders in their deliberations. As such, the Pacific Islands Forum remains a 16-member bo

WELLINGTON, May 2 (Xinhua) — The Chair of the Pacific Islands Forum and Niue Premier Toke Talagi announced on Saturday that Fiji has been suspended from the Forum.
“I confirm the suspension of the current military regime in Fiji from full participation in the Pacific Islands Forum, with immediate effect from May 2, 2009,” he said in a statement.
Talagi said Fiji military leader Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama had failed to address by Friday’s deadline the expectations of forum leaders to return Fiji to democratic governance in an acceptable time-frame.
The suspension was “also particularly timely given the recent disturbing deterioration of the political, legal and human rights situation in Fiji since April 10, 2009,” Talagi said in the statement.
“A regime which displays such a total disregard for basic human rights, democracy and freedom has no place in the Pacific Islands Forum.
He confirmed that “this decision does not amount to the expulsion of Fiji, as a nation, from its membership of the Forum.”
“We look forward with great hope to Fiji’s earliest possible return to constitutional democracy, through free and fair elections, when we will be able to restore this country to its rightful place among our family of Pacific Islands Forum nations,” he said.
Last month, Fiji’s president revoked the constitution and sacked the judiciary, after the Court of Appeal ruled the interim government illegal. Emergency regulations were brought into force. Fiji Interim Prime Minister Bainimarama has said there will be no elections until 2014.

UN to halt Fiji troop recruitment: Rudd
Bloggers, well the inevitable has happened and now the UN has made its stand against the illegal Fijian government and where do they go from here? Whilst we understand the terrible consequences Fijian families are going to suffer, wives and children of these soldiers should stand up to their husbands and blame them for the predicament Fiji finds itself in. If only they had stood up to illegal orders, we would not be in this situation.
When President Tui Savu called for the ‘Coalition of the Willing’ last week, some bloggers were a bit skeptical and wanted action and no more words.
We do not claim President Tui Savu’s letter was solely responsible for this result, however we are confident it played a part, but even if it did not, then at least it shows he was in tune with the mindset of the Australian Government at the time.
The Australian Government has done a 180 degree turn from their initial statement after the launch of the Fiji Democracy and Freedom Movement in Sydney, that no further sanctions will be imposed on Fiji because of the effect on innocent citizens to actively lobbying the UN to terminate Fiji’s participation in the UN.
E-Petitions must be working and the SWM Management Board welcomes PM Rudd’s statement, who no doubt was supported by NZ and the Pacific Island Forum Leaders. SWM encourages the Leaders to join our ‘Coalition of the Willing’ and implement the other issues raised by President Tui Savu, such as amending the Crime (Foreign Incursions and Recruitment) Act 1978, etc which will topple the illegal regime in Fiji.
Members, those of you who forwarded their E-Petitions onto PM Rudd, to blogger Samy who instigated the initial E-Petition and Katalina Balawanilotu from the US for her constant encouragement and support, a big thank you from us and remember, ‘the pen is still mightier than the sword’, so keep those E-Petitions flowing ragone!
