Documentary: Why does Alexandria not have a daily newspaper? on Vimeo
The documentary was reported and filmed on location in Alexandria, Egypt. Working with a translator and an assistant, the film's director, Robb Montgomery, worked with 14 Egyptian journalists to report and edit an original documentary in one week's time.

The journalists worked in two teams on locations around Egypt's second-largest city with the goal of interviewing a wide range of subjects. The film project is produced entirely in Arabic language. (an English-language version may be available later in 2090)

Over the course of four days the reporters received daily instruction in the fundamentals of video journalism by the producer and were given live filming assignments to begin the reporting for this documentary.

This film was produced during a Video Journalism training workshop sponsored by USAID and the Egypt Media Develpment Project.

The movie was first screened at the Bibliotech Library in Alexandria for an international journalism conference that was organized around how to produce better local media and reporting in the Arab world.

Small cameras can tell big stories on Vimeo
Robb Montgomery reporting from Niagara Falls, Canada.

The ability to tell really big stories with really small cameras is something that is fascinating to share with colleagues.

I work with editors-in-chief and their staff in many newsrooms and classrooms around the world to develop training and design new workflows and the challenge is to not only raise the quantity, the number of videos a newsroom is able to post online, but the quality of those stories as well.

Web video is an incredibly rich medium, one that print-trained journalists can succeed in.
