what people are saying

Ever since I found Dexter on my Showtime VOD channel between seasons one and two, I've been hooked. Strange for me in that there's blood and murder and stuff like that and I'm not really one for the procedurals or the cop shows (though I admire the oeuvre of Dick Wolf. The CSI guys? Not so much).Really, my love of the show started with Michael C. Hall, who I found very authentic playing the gay brother on Six Feet Under, though I only watched the first season. Because Dex is a very different guy from David Fisher I was very much blown away by what I saw and I was hooked.Dexter Morgan is a guy who studies blood splatter for the Miami PD during the day and makes blood splatter at night. Not that he needs the business, there are plenty of murders without Dex adding to the total. But he is compelled to kill, and kills the bad guys because he adoptive Dad channeled his "disease" into the only positive channel he could.Always nice to see Dad's take an interest in their kids, huh?In the two seasons that we've seen you would think we've seen it all, but the one thing we haven't seen starts the ball rolling. There's an accidental death. That's something that doesn't happen much on this show. And Sgt. Doakes, Dex's nemesis for the last two seasons, is now gone, blown up really good in that shack in the Everglades thanks to Lila, who's also gone (but to another network and another show). So,the new guy is, as you might know, Jimmy Smits. Hall says about Smits (USA Today):"The relationship will be the central arc of theseason," says Hall, 37. "It's sort of the trunk of the tree with manybranches. Initially, it sheds light on Dexter's simultaneous aversionfor and attraction to this idea of connection. He's in uncharteredterritory."(snip)The Emmy-nominated Hall says he relished working with Emmy winner Smits (NYPD Blue, The West Wing). "Jimmy'sbeen fantastic. He brings such a complexity and gravity to thecharacter," Hall says. "He's an incredibly fine actor; it's a real shotin the arm for the show."Smits pla...
