Dear Barack:

Well, frankly, I didn't think you could do it. But last night, you really made my New Year!

Ignore the bend-over-backwards folks and the racist equivalency masters. You won the second presidential debate, hands down.

On the third debate, remind people that the path toward federal fiscal solvency is not to make permanent the Bush tax cuts for the wealthy. John McCain was right when he opposed those tax cuts twice. He is wrong to favor their largesse now.

Use the term "largesse," and I'll send you a bright, shiny New York State red apple. Because I think you were at your absolute best when you stressed the quality of your education, from which -- among other reasons -- I inferred that you are smarter than John McCain.

Your intelligence is a singularly attractive quality. So hit it, again. The Republicans haven't the time to label you (uggh!) an “intellectual” and make it stick.

We need someone who is bright enough to lead the herd, not someone who simply resists branding. [That's "maverick" to the hoi polloi.]

Suddenly, it really does feel like a new year!
