THE SUN QUEEN | Chapter 1 | AMERICAN EXPERIENCE | PBS

Spanning a period of almost half a century, the chemical engineer and innovator Mária Telkes directed her exceptional cognitive abilities toward the exploitation of solar energy. Her contributions include the conception and construction of the inaugural solar-heated abode of the modern era. In this journey, she encountered numerous obstacles, including resistance and undermining from her male superiors and peers at MIT. Despite these challenges, her determination remained steadfast. The photograph shows an individual standing with their gaze upwards, dressed in a coat that appears to be made of fur, whilst behind them there’s a structure with a minimalist design, possibly part of a building. The black and white tone of the photograph lends it a historical quality.
