Colin Powell, the Republican former Secretary of State, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and National Security Advisor has endorsed Barack Obama. At this point, virtually every serious conservative with the slightest intellectual credibility has endorsed Obama and/or decried the candidacy of John McCain. From David Frum and George Will to Chris Buckley and Peggy Noonan, practically every one of the giants of movement conservatism, has decried the McCain candidacy, with particular disdain for the complete lack of seriousness of Sarah Palin. These are the heavyweights of Conservatism, not leftists, "media liberals" or socialists. It seems to me that virtually all that's left to McCain are the people screaming "Obama Osama" and and "He's a Muslim." I ask my friends among the McCain partisans to think about the company they are keeping. The people they are standing with are the worst element of American society: An element full of hate, ignorance and disdain for intellectual achievement. This is what has become of the Party of Reagan. Even Newt Gingrich has expressed his disgust with the campaign, if not support for Obama. Can anyone seriously say at this point that the McCain-Palin ticket would be good for America? Is everyone except the most radical of the right-wing ideologues wrong? Please, think about it. Think about it long and hard. America is better than the party of Palin. It's better than the hate seen in such unabashed and unashamed displays over the last few weeks. My friends, you are better than this.
