More than a week after voters in California, Arizona and Florida passed ballot initiatives outlawing same-sex marriage, thousands of people across the country protested the bans in simultaneous rallies Saturday. Joining in on the demonstrations was Comedian Wanda Sykes. She surprised the organizers of the gay rights rally in Las Vegas this weekend by coming out publicly as a lesbian for the first time. Don't know what to say Wanda, like you as a comedian, you are one of the best, but I am a straight black year old female who's been with the same man for over 20 years, sorry I don't believe in gay marriage, don't know if marriage period is all that most people say it is, because I truly believe that most men especially, and alot of women today would remain single if it wasn't for the fact that our faiths, christians, muslims, jewish, etc etc etc, teaches us that it is a sin to have sex outside of marriage, and the quote from Paul in the bible that says he wished all men could be like him , but that it was better for man to marry than to burn in hell, and then I know that old saying which I believe in my heart that God started this whole thing with a man and a woman, and I could go on and on, but since they say God gives us free will, I know you also believe and that part is true that you can't tell grown folks in their personal life what to do, and I must say if I had a gay child, I would not turn my back on them, how can you turn your back on someone you carried for nine months, or someone you carried from your heart when you adopted them, or if you're the father, someone you helped to make, the reason for their being, I don't agree on this movement being anything like the civil rights movement, now I do have a problem with that, although I know Coretta Scott-King one of my sheroes was totally against discrimination and bigotry in any form, and she was your ally, in that she felt that lgbt were being treated horribly by certain groups in this country, still I think they should just past laws where you are granted the same rights as married couples ,that no one can come in and take anything from you , including your children, which I thought were already in place with civil unions, can I just say it, I still can't figure out, but I really don't care anymore at all, how two people of the same sex can be in love,

Mother of a gay son, daughter of a woman who fought for Civil Rights and Women, I have tears in my eyes for the pain my son has felf because of exclusion ....I also have hope in my heart, because the entire country will be called to change.

Nothing so powerful as an idea whose time has come ... Victor Hugo
If I was anyone, I would do the same thing.Amazingly powerful! The most important YouTube video you might watch this year.Including:"You know what? Now I gotta get in your face. They pissesd off the wrong group of people. They have galvanized the community. We are so together now and we all want the same thing and we are not gonna settle for less. Instead of having gay marriage in California, no, we'll have it all across the country." From Steve Freiss' Vegas Happens Here blog (his image of Wanda above):In my interview with her, she said this: "Peopleshouldn’t have to talk about their sexual orientation, we shouldn’thave to do it, but with the legislation that they passed, I can’t sitby and just watch. I just can’t do it." Sykes alsodisputed the much-reported claim that 70 percent of black voters inCalifornia voted to ban gay marriage. Several prominent writers, including Dan Savage here, have railed against homophobic blacks. Wanda said the exit polls werewrong and admonished me, "Please stop spreading that 70 percent ofAfrican-Americans voted Yes on Prop 8 because it’s just not true." After the speeches, the very large -- figure more than 1,000 people -- crowd lined Sahara Avenue with signs. Go Las Vegas. Comedian Wanda Sykes came out publicly at a rally yesterday in Las Vegas.Said Sykes: "I got married October 25th. My wife is here. I don't really talk about my sexual orientation, didn't think I had to. I was just livin my life. Not necessarily in the closet but I was just livin my life. Everybody that knows me personally, they know I'm gay. That's the way people should be able to live their lives really. If we had equal rights...we shouldn't have to be out here demanding something that we automatically should have as citizens of this country. But I got pissed off. They pissed me off. I said, you know, what I gotta get in your face. And that's what we have to do now. They have pissed off the wrong group of people!" Image of Sykes by Towleroad reader Derek Washington. original description

Wanda Sykes, who came out of the closet publicly last year at a demonstration in Las Vegas protesting the passage of Proposition 8, has been selected to perform at the annual White House Correspondents Dinner, traditionally a roast of the President: "The comic actress said Thursday that she has been selected as the entertainer at the annual White House Correspondents' Association annual dinner in Washington, slated for May 9. Obama is expected to attend the black-tie affair at the Washington Hilton and to follow in his predecessors' tradition by putting on a comedy act of his own. The guest list of some 2,000 people will likely include the usual mix of Washington elite, White House press corps and Hollywood celebrities. 'The first thing I did when they asked me to do this gig — I made sure my taxes were paid,' quipped Sykes, taking a dig at the withdrawal of former U.S. Sen. Tom Daschle from Obama's cabinet due to unpaid taxes...She said it's her job to 'poke fun and ridicule,' and even a popular figure like Obama isn't off limits. She already has some ideas about what she could mine for laughs. For example, she noted, Obama can be "a little long-winded. So we can get him on that." Sykes began her career as a stand-up comic during an unhappy stint at the National Security Agency (NSA), where she worked for five years.
