what people are saying

In his office at CBS-TV studios in Hollywood, Bill Maher is busy being Bill Maher. “You’ll never get rid of Christianity in this country because it will reinvent itself, as it always has. Every generation does a Superman movie, every generation does Hamlet, and they do it in a new and different way. Because that’s what a myth is: a living, breathing, mutating thing. So that central bit of, ‘There was a God, he had a son and he died for your sins’? I mean that’s just an entitlement programme that no one wants to give up! Why would you? ‘Oh, he died for my sins? That’s fantastic - why, of course I love him! So I can keep sinning now, because he died for me!’”Somewhere along the way, this half-Catholic, half-Jewish, wholly non-observant stand-up comedian has turned into one of the most visible, vocal atheists in America. He is a ruder, less intellectual, far more foul-mouthed and much funnier teammate of Christopher Hitchens, Sam Harris and Richard Dawkins. Next week sees the release of Maher’s own atheist manifesto, the effervescent and provocative documentary feature film Religulous.Read more here.Maher needs to take a lesson from Penn of Penn and Teller.  Penn who is an atheist says that if you believe that Jesus is the only way to heaven you would have to hate someone not to tell them. Why does Maher and other atheists feel the need to convince people not to believe in God. If you don’t believe then don’t worry about it? Why do these atheists feel it is their mission in life to convince everyone that there is no God? If that is how you feel just go enjoy life. What do you think?Copyright © 2009 Confessions of a Recovering Pharisee. This Feed is for personal non-commercial use only. After six years of Bible Bowl throughout middle and high school, three years at Johnson Bible College, and almost ten years of student ministry I embarrassingly admit that I do not not know the text like I should at this point.  I say this up front as a disclaimer that I am nowhere close to [...]

Penn Jillette has a lot to say about religion, he is an atheist, but here is a provocative video where he tells of someone who gave him a Bible.

He says some interesting things that Christians should remember when talking to unbelievers:

He was complimentary
He said nice stuff
He gave me...
He looked me in the eye
He made it personal (Penn says: "He said I wrote in the front of it, wanted you to have it)
He was not defensive
He was truly complimentary, kind, nice, sane, looked me in the eye
He cared enough about me to talk to me

Here are some other things he said about the encounter and evangelism (proselytizing):

It was really wonderful
I don't respect people who don't proselytize
How much do you have to hate people to not proselytize, if you really believe heaven and hell is at stake
He cared enough about me to talk to me

Not all atheists and unbelievers are interested in being evangelized, but everyone is interested when you care about them. Evangelism must be driven by unadulterated love for the person you are speaking to. It is not a debate or an argument, it is an expression of care and concern.

“I don’t respect people who don’t proselytize. If you believe that there’s a heaven and hell, and people could be going to hell, and you think, ‘Well, it’s not really worth telling them this because it would make it socially awkward’… How much do you have to hate somebody to not proselytize”?“How much do you have to hate somebody to believe there is Eternal Life and not tell somebody?
