Yesterday we were supportive of Barack Obama’s choice of CNN’s Sanjay Gupta as Surgeon General, based largely on the fact that he has extremely hairy arms and that his job, since the Clinton Administration, will consist largely of teaching me how to masturbate. But it seems that there is a good bit of criticism, (a) from Doctors who want a real Doctor (even though he’s a brain surgeon and he operated on Iraqi children when he was on assignment for CNN) and (b) from the left, who apparently found his debate with Michael Moore pretty hack-ish. Frankly I guess it comes down to how much you care for Michael Moore. I don’t like him but I do agree with him, which makes this debate on Larry King Live pretty unsettling. Though Gupta certainly looks better on a beach than Michael Moore …
I'm sorry, but I am disliking Pres.-Elect Obama's choices to fill the last high-profile positions in his administration. Case in point: Sanjay Gupta is cute as hell, but I stopped liking him when I started listening to his reports and realized how pro-corporate he is. Then he went against Michael Moore's brilliant, progressive Sicko with some dubious facts. I do not want a Surgeon General who is an apologist for the pharmaceutical companies. On the plus side, it's energizing to have a youthful, telegenic candidate who people know—but that's only if his message is one I agree with. I'm siding against this decision but will try to keep an open mind if he gets the part job. (If you think Gupta is not a mealy-mouthed corporate shill, watch the video—halfway through, he goes to the mat against free health care in an extremely disingenuous way.)
If I remember correctly (and I might not) Gupta is against any kind of universal health care which is seriously going to upset many Obama supporters. Gupta did a fact check on Michael Moore’s “Sicko”(More Info) angering many leftists. Michael Moore took issue with Gupta’s facts and the two duked it out on Larry King. (See video below)By Howard KurtzPresident-elect Barack Obama has offered the job of surgeon general to Dr. Sanjay Gupta, the neurosurgeon and correspondent for CNN and CBS, according to two sources with knowledge of the situation.Gupta has told administration officials that he wants the job, and the final vetting process is under way. He has asked for a few days to figure out the financial and logistical details of moving his family from Atlanta to Washington but is expected to accept the offer. The Michigan-born son of Indian and Pakistani parents, Gupta has always been drawn to health policy. He was a White House fellow in the late 1990s, writing speeches and crafting policy for Hillary Clinton. His appointment would give the administration a prominent official of Southwest Asian descent and a skilled television spokesman.washingtonpost.com.Here is the video of a confrontation between Moore and Gupta on Larry King:
