On December 19, 2008, Ken Starr and the Prop 8 Legal Defense Fund filed legal briefs defending the constitutionality of Prop 8 and also sought to nullify the 18,000 same-sex marriages that had already been conducted between May and November of 2008. We here at LGR have long been telling you that one of the major financiers of this initiative is Erik Prince, founder of the gun for hire, mercenary company… Blackwater International. Founded in 1998 Blackwater Worldwide is a for-profit corporation of trained soldiers and ‘security professionals,’ and has sent thousands of “security personnel” to work in hot spots around the world. Blackwater trains more than 40,000 people every year, has 20,000 soldiers for hire on call, owns the world’s largest private military base, and controls a fleet of twenty aircraft. What Erick Princes company does, is kill people for money… And on the lengthy conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan his goons have killed a lot of people Blackwater Worldwide and Erik Prince has made a lot of money. U.S. taxpayers have already contributed more than $1 billion to Blackwater’s corporate coffers to carry out operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. But despite being on the taxpayer’s payroll, Blackwater is largely unaccountable to the taxpayers for their actions. In September 2007, Blackwater hit men gun down 17 unarmed civilians in Nisoor Square in Baghdad. Federal agents investigating this incident found that the shootings were unjustified and violated deadly-force rules in effect for security contractors in Iraq. On Dec. 8, 2008, federal prosecutors charged of these gun men involved in this incident with manslaughter and a sixth, admitted in a plea deal to killing at least one innocent Iraqi during the incident. It is believed that operating free of the restraints of military rule and ethics, some of these Blackwater thugs were involved in the torture scandal at the Abu Ghraib prison and walked away with impunity.
