This video features the people that Sean Penn references in his acceptance speech (see the previous post). This is the level of intelligence that everyone who supported Prop 8 employed when voting to incorporate personal opinions and the opinions of spiritual leaders into the California Constitution. Homosexuality and your opinion of it has NOTHING to do with government and civil rights. Imagine being able to vote on the rights of redheads just because you think they're visual pollution. Luckily, we can't incarcerate redheads because the government protects its citizens from hatred and prejudice. In fact, all civil rights issues, from blacks to females, were initiated and protected by unpopular government action. Citizens do not have the authority to strip each other of inalienable rights, regardless of their personal opinion. Does anyone really believe the womans rights movement eliminated sexism? Well, it didn't. But that didn't stop the government from force feeding the bill of rights to the American people, no matter how short sighted their views regarding women were at the time. In the same vein, I don't expect homophobia to ever go away. Someone will always hate you, that's human nature. However, popular opinion does not relieve the government of its responsibility to protect the rights of minorities. In short, we can not hope for tolerance if the constitution and our legal system are not strong enough to re-educate the American people on gay rights.
