Between yellowstone/tetons and now, I flew over to europe and led backroads trips in france and italy, then traveled on bicicletta through northern italy into slovenia with 160 backroads leaders and staff for our annual staff ride….flew back to the USA, stopped in chicago to see my lovely family and then made the big move out to DC (on election day), started a new job with the Aspen Institute, found an apartment, and am living happily ever after…almost. The trip went smoothly but it was the train ride over to italy that was oh so memorable. My friend had warned me about the overnight paris to florence route (she unknowingly made friends with a convict who, at 2am, was pulled off the train in handcuffs). My ride was a bit different: I arrived in the car just as a florentine man was shoving his suitcases up into the overhead storage. Soon an australian woman arrived and finally a man from tunisia who immediately began overly friendly chatter. Though a bit suspicious, I knew I’d have to get some sleep so gathered all my luggage in bed with me and closed my eyes. We were awakened with a knock on the door around 1am; the train had stopped before entering italy. The italian polizia brought their search dog into our compartment, dragged out the tunisian man, and searched his bags– all they found was perfume for his mother. They then came back in and started yelling at the florentine man who was “fast asleep.” They finally woke him up and dragged him outside to find that half of his luggage (funny that he had tried to “hide” the luggage seeing as searc...
