It was a difficult period for Kucinich financially. Without a steady paycheck, Kucinich fell behind in his mortgage payments, nearly lost his house in Cleveland, and ended up borrowing money from friends, including MacLaine, to keep it.[18] On his 1982 income tax return, Kucinich reported an income of $38. Layoffs are an epidemic. It seems at times that a return of the plague would be preferable to more layoffs (Not really.) Well, the number of layoffs and more payday loans being taken out are attributable to the people that many thought to be the newly untouchable group – the hi-tech industries. Well, hi-tech isn't quite high profit as much anymore. The recession has forced people to cut back on their tech toys, so software and hardware developers have been shedding employees. IBM, for instance, just farmed out 5,000 jobs overseas. (Executive bonuses and oriental rugs in the office MUST be protected.) In 1982, Kucinich moved back to Cleveland and ran for Secretary of State; however, he lost the Democratic primary to Sherrod Brown. In 1983, Kucinich won a special election to fill the seat of a Cleveland city councilman who had died.[19] His brother, Gary Kucinich, was also a councilman at the time.
