I find it ironic that with the information on here and your comments that you do not understand animal behavior. Yes, coyotes are simple creatures that are more scared of humans. But we as individuals must realize that we have altered the way things are done in the ecology of these animals. We have had large amounts of food that has decreased the last few years and taking in the scientifically accepted growth and reduction of the coyote and rabbit graphs, we find that we have low population of rabbits and high amount of coyotes. With this lack of food the coyotes are more prone to human interaction with individuals. The coyote was not coming for the human it was coming for the dog. It was hungry. Who would not do the same for a family that would die with out eating. A Coyote will attack and has been happening all over the southwestern cities lately. The only thing to do when you change the environment in which animals live is to manage it. That is why they hire people to trap and irradicate predators. And yes, coyotes are classified as predators. You can not just leave something alone that has been changed. You have to manage and people have to learn that! There is no simple fix!
The coyotes in the City of Greenwood Village are no different than in any other suburb.
The difference? The city REFUSES to enforce its leash laws, claiming that this would "offend" some of their wealthy, spoiled residents ( who helped get them elected)
"Appeasing the wealthy constituents" is the city's primary goal.
The city went on a fox killing spree a few years ago too, in order to appease these few, very vocal Greenwood Village residents.
The City is also currently killing off prairie dogs, which are a primary food source for coyotes!
The City claims its a good policy to kill coyotes to "reduce fear in their residents."
It is even setting up caged traps on private property a foot away from nature preserve areas, baited with dead chickens and rabbits to catch any and all coyotes they can.
The coyote problem is a human ignorance and irresponsibility problem which has been GREATLY exaggerated, including outright lies by city officials and some residents who simply hate any wildlife larger than a rabbit.
There is much more behind this fiasco than meets the eye.

I live near coyotes and hear them behind my house at night. I have NEVER been approached by a coyote and they run as soon as they see me. They of course will eat people's pets, but that's an obvious one and it's easy to discourage that (don't leave them unattended and don't leave food and water outside). It's easy to discourage them. How many of us have been told that while hiking and you see a wild animal/predator, you make yourself appear bigger (raise your arms) and make loud noises. Why are these particular suburban people so stupid? And they are just fear mongering and heightening an erroneous sense of hatred for coyotes. If you move into their territory, you will encounter them so be smarter about it.
These people are hysterical -- I live near coyotes -- they never bother anyone. Coyotes in neighboring cities don't act this way either.
The "aggressiveness" is a lie because the extremely wealthy people just don't like coyotes.
Typical white man's solution: If you don't like something, if it's annoying to you, KILL IT.
The Denver suburbs have poisoned, gassed and blown up (literally) one of the coyotes food source already -- the prairie dogs -- by gassing them to appease residents who don't like prairie dogs.
I find it incredible that the people shown on this video say they were "attacked" yet they have not shown their injuries. Wouldn't you think they would have a scratch to show for their "attack."
I'd like to tell the mother of the "attacked" boy that she can rest assured that they will not be "attacked" and they can relax. I'm on the canal daily and have never seen any aggression from them. It is we who are the aggressor, the predator, who seeks to destroy anything that competes for space on this planet. Sadly, you loud, squeaky wheels will get your way in Greenwood Village and the coyote will lose along with me and others who have walked the fields among them and cherish their presence.
The coyote will disappear from GV just like the fox, racoons, skunks and all the others that were all a part of an precious ecosystem. You egocentric fearmongers can live in your killing fields alone and barren like your minds and hearts.
Ghandi said we are as good as the way we treat the animals around us. How good does that make you Greenwood Village residents who annually call for the death of our local wildlife?

The Today Show on NBC ran a short segment regarding the city of Greenwood Village, CO and their new push to kill coyotes within their city limits. Nicole Rosmarino of WildEarth Guardians is featured in the segment, and will have more to say about this on this blog in the near future.
