There’s been some debate in our house recently about the YPC sketch that was on last week’s Horne & Corden show.If you missed it, then this is what its all about:So the big question is should Christians find this offensive? Personally, I’m not that bothered by it, and do think it is quite funny, mainly because I can see where the albeit exaggerated reality comes from. Some Christians (particularly at youth events) can be over-enthusisastic in a cheesy kind of a way, and some “worship” songs do have the “Jesus is my boyfriend” type of lyrics. It seems that the YPC characters are going to be in future episodes of the show in this series, and Corden has admitted that the BBC have censored some of the material for fear it would offend. This reminds me of a clip from one of my favourite TV shows - Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip - where the cast perform a sketch in which Jesus is appointed Head of Standards. This is so they can get away with saying “Jesus Christ” on TV. I can’t seem to find a clip of this on YouTube, but includes the line “Jesus Christ its hot in here…do you mind if we open a window?”So, what do you think? Should Christians be offended by material that mocks us? Or are we fair game?
