The goal of Earth Hour 2009 is 1 billion people switching off their lights as a vote for the future of the planet Earth so VOTE EARTH!!!
This year on March 28th from 8:30 - 9:30pm in each and every time zone, people of all ages, nationalities, race and background will have the opportunity to put their finger on the light switch and move it to the OFF position!! Switching off your lights is a Vote for Earth in a campaign that helps raise awareness of global warming. WWF are urging the world to VOTE EARTH and reach the target of 1 billion votes, which will be presented to world leaders at the Global Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen 2009. The purpose of the conference is to determine official government policies to take action against global warming, which will replace the Kyoto Protocol. It is a time for people around the globe to make their voices heard!
Earth Hour began in Sydney in 2007, when 2.2 million homes and businesses switched off their lights for one hour. In 2008 the message had grown into a global sustainability movement, with 50 million people switching off their lights. Unlike any election in history, it is not about what country you’re from, but instead, what planet you’re from. VOTE EARTH is a global call to action for every individual, every business, and every community. This year, there are many individuals helping to raise awareness of this event. JJProjects has headed an effort on 12 Seconds asking the community to help raise awareness by creating 12 second videos on what they will do during Earth Hour. These short Earth Hour “commercials” are automatically sent to the Twitter community. From there, with the new integration of Facebook to Twitter, many of these tweets are seen by all of the Facebook community…and on and on and on…
2,712 cities, towns and municipalities in 83 countries have already committed to VOTE EARTH for Earth Hour 2009, as part of the worlds first global election between Earth and
