Spy Collection Highlights – Meet the Insectothopter (CIA’s first dragon-fly drone)

Imagine a creature of espionage, seemingly plucked from the pages of a spy novel — the Insectothopter! This minuscule flying device, resembling a dragonfly, represented the CIA’s pioneering foray into insect-sized drones. Developed in 1976, this prototype embodied a fusion of surveillance and micro-aviation technology, featuring a concealed microphone. Regrettably, its diminutive stature meant it could not be guided from afar, and at the time, suitable surveillance technology to equip it was simply nonexistent.

The object depicted is a small, mechanical device designed to mimic the appearance of a dragonfly, with translucent wings attached to a metallic body. The body consists of intricate mechanical components, giving it an industrial look, juxtaposed with the delicate nature of insect wings. Bold lettering above the device reads “INSECTOTHPTER,” and in the bottom right corner is an emblem denoting “SPY,” suggesting an affiliation with espionage or intelligence. The backdrop is a neutral, light surface that provides contrast to the metallic elements of the design.
