Seth Godin talks about how the Internet and social media allows any of us to create our own "followings". He does not necessarily mean this in the form of followers of a leader, but rather to develop a community to embrace something you're passionate about, by which you at least start out as a leader because of your passion for it to start the movement.

Seth Godin argues the Internet has ended mass marketing and revived a human social unit from the distant past: tribes. Founded on shared ideas and values, tribes give ordinary people the power to lead and make big change. He urges us to do so.

Seth Godin is an entrepreneur and blogger who thinks about the marketing of ideas in the digital age. His newest interest: the tribes we lead.

We found this cool video on the TED website of Seth Godin, marketing guru. In his speech, he claims the domination of the web has ended mass marketing as we know it. He calls our new marketing civilization a group of tribes. “Founded on shared ideas and values, tribes give ordinary people the power to lead and make big change. He urges us to do so.”

At the SBDITC we are trying to create a tribe of small business owners. We run this blog and established a facebook group for entrepreneurs. We provide counseling to a group of loyal clients. Want to join our tribe? Call us at (619) 482-6391 to schedule an appointment for no-cost one-on-one counseling.

Seth Godin took to the TED podium recently to explain his theory behind “Tribes”. He argues that the internet has fundamentally changed the way brands need to market themselves. Gone are the days where mass marketing rules the roost and big media budgets dictate market share. Individuals now hold the power and can enact change by connecting with other people who share the same tribal instincts. Whilst not explicitly relating this back to brands, the challenge for all marketers is to figure out how to become tribal leaders. He concludes the talk by suggesting brands should adopt the following behaviour:1. challenge the status quo – if you don’t upset someone or disrupt the status quo you’re unlikely to start a movement. It’s less about pushing products and more about appealing to their shared sense of values and any latent desires which have yet to be realised. 2. build a culture or ’secret handshake’ which connects with individuals and ignites their passion, stimulating them into action. 3. Become charismatic. You don’t need to have charisma to begin with necessarily but all leaders eventually acquire it if they lead from the front. 4. Commit to the tribe. Don’t do this in half measures. If you’re going to lead, commit yourself to the cause and throw some weight behind it.If you manage to do that people will follow. Well that’s the plan anyway!

I just finished watching this inspiring presentation by Seth Godin from TED 2009 and wanted to briefly reflect on the implications of it all. So much of this presentation resonated with me that I can’t discuss every single point in detail, so instead I might expand on the overall feeling I leave this presentation with. I recommend spending the next 17:23 minutes watching this video - it’s well worth it. What I find so inspiring about this presentation is the notion that every contribution is valuable; every action that seeks to affect change and resolve a matter of concern is a worthwhile endeavor - no matter how small, no matter how many or few people who engage in the quest as well. It’s only through action that change can occur, and according to Godin, the vehicle for change is now the tribe.Godin argues that this pursuit of change is fundamental to who we are, saying “…what we do is we try to do is change everything. We try to find a piece of the status quo, something that bothers us, something that needs to be improved, something that’s itching to be changed and we change it. And we try to make big, permanent, important change.”Further, he argues that change is most effectively pursued and achieved through the efforts of tribe. “It turns out that it’s tribes, not money, not factories that can change our world; that can change politics; that can change large numbers of people. Not because you force them to do something against their will, but because they want to connect.”He continues that we first find something that needs to be improved or changed: “what we do for a living now…is find something worth changing, and then assemble tribes….It becomes far bigger than ourselves; it becomes a movement.”Significantly, Godin argues that you don’t need everyone to affect this change and mobilise movements, you only need a core group of dedicate, passionate people who tirelessly keep the momentum going and over time the movement will build and grow. “What it is about inst

En esta charla Seth Godin explora el concepto de liderato 2.0 y nos invita a hacer la diferencia mediante la creación de movimientos para cambiar el status quo. A mitad de la charla nos ofrece un pensamiento de oro: “If you’re not upsetting anyone, you’re not changing the status quo.”.
