The leader of the Tamil Tiger rebels has been killed, according to the Sri Lankan military, who announced his death on state-run television.

The Sri Lankan army says the Tigers, who have been fighting for an independent homeland for nearly 30 years, have now been totally defeated.

Although the war has been declared over, there is international concern about civilians who have been caught up in the fighting.
