I remember a story of a man who stood up to his own church and said many of their practices were unjust and oppressive. He traveled around and told all people that his God was a loving forgiving God. When he was confronted with injustice, people would ask him, "The scripture says this is the law, what should we do?." Often, he would just ask them what they think God would want. His number one rule to judge all other rules was to treat others the way you want to be treated. Of course, that was many years ago and the religious rights and superstitions of that time were often brutal by today's standards. Nevertheless, none of them would have changed if someone with strength and courage did not stands up and say with conviction, "This injustice has to stop." There have been many before Lt Dan Choi for inspiration, but I hope there does not have to be any others to follow. I have no doubt that eventually this oppression will also melt away when held to the light of decency and respect for each other.
