Amsterdam based SPRXMobile has submitted its much-anticipated Augmented Reality platform app Layar to Apple for inclusion in the iPhone app store, according to multiple messages from the company on Twitter. Augmented Reality services display data on top of a view of the real physical world.
Augmented Reality apps have been slowly trickling into the iPhone for the last several weeks but Layar's flashy platform for displaying all kinds of different data sets, from Yelp reviews to Trulia real-estate listings, on top of the phone's camera view has been the most eagerly awaited.

A new augmented reality app called Layar is making the rounds on the web as an example of what can be done with Augmented Reality. Layer (via 9to5Mac) is described as the world's first mobile augmented reailty browser.
Layar shows you what is around you by displaying realtime digital information on top of reality through the camera of the mobile phone. Just flip through the directory of layers and find ATM's, bars, houses for sale, hotels and other cool stuff around you. The app accomplishes this through the use of the Compass, camera and GPS embedded within the phone. The developer's video shows it running
The app is first available for the Android devices but they are working hard on porting it to other platforms "with a prime focus on the iPhone 3G S.". The iPhone 3G S is the first Apple iPhone to contain a digital compass which is required for such applications.
A still from Twittaround, the original augmented reality Twitter search appLess than a month ago, a fascinating, if slightly creepy, mobile app called Twittaround launched — overlaying nearby tweets onto a smartphone camera. The concept was intriguing enough to spark immediate competition: SPRXMobile, the company behind the augmented reality browser Layar, is partnering with Tweetmondo, which... Augmented reality (AR) technology, which overlays 3-D graphics or information over a live camera feed, isn’t a brand-new idea. But now that smartphones are penetrating the mass market, AR may be on the cusp of wide adoption.Imagine traveling to a foreign country, pointing your camera at a building and having it up pull up a trove of historical information, video and images of the place over the past century. Two early AR services are SPRXMobile’s Layar (in the Netherlands) and Tonchidot’s Sekai Camera (in Japan), which dig up real estate, job listings or user-generated tags when you point an Android-based phone or iPhone at buildings.Gaming companies are using augmented reality technology by building 3-D animations that appear on screen for games that interact with a player’s physical surrounding. There are a few examples floating around like this one of an augmented reality, zombie-killing game from Georgia Tech, although few are in commercial use yet.Other areas of augmented reality, like marketing and promotions, are a bit gimmicky, especially since most seem to rely on Web cams or stationary video cameras and are not compatible with smartphones yet. For sales applications of augmented reality, the eventual idea would be to walk down a store aisle, point the camera on your phone at a box and see an animation related to what’s inside. There’s been a lot of startup activity in this space of late. Here’s a look at the various contenders (by the way, be sure to take a look at our coverage today of the AR community’s effort to get Apple to open up the iPhone to AR apps):The AR BrowsersLayar is an Android-based, augmented reality browser from Dutch start-up SPRXMobile. Users can pan their cell phone cameras around and see nearby buildings and spaces tagged with information from the web. Layar currently has five such ”layers” pulling real estate listings, job posts and reviews and is only available in the Netherlands. SPRXMobile plans to bring the browser to international markets and develop
Layar is one mobile application that has definitely managed to get quite some tongues rolling and keyboards rattling this past week, including at the Mobile 2.0 Europe conference in Spain where I just got back from (video demo below). Layar is a so-called 'augmented reality browser', an application that turns you mobile phone's camera viewer - only on Android-powered phones for the time being - into a full-fledged information portal and local business search engine. It essentially puts an information overlay on top of your camera view, bringing digital data of various sorts into play whenever you're looking at or for something in the real world.
Have you ever wondered what happens if there is a serious situation and you need an automated external defibrillator? According to Wikipedia:
An automated external defibrillator or AED is a portable electronic device that automatically diagnoses the potentially life threatening cardiac arrhythmias of ventricular fibrillation and ventricular tachycardia in a patient, and is able to treat [...]
