Son of the talented and eccentric composer Simon Jeffes, Arthur Jeffes has created Music From The Penguin Café, playing the music his father wrote for The Penguin Café Orchestra and combining it with his own new work. The PCO were probably best-known for their hypnotic piece Telephone and Rubber Band, written round the tape loop of an engaged and ringing telephone sound, and for their use of unusual instrumentation – ukuleles, harmoniums and Venezuelan cuatro, to name a few. This far-reaching ensemble achieved cult status in the 80s and 90s with their unique sound, minimalist and experimental yet melodic, catchy and quintessentially English, familiar from hundreds of film soundtracks and commercials.
