BBC NEWS: "The highest ranking Army officer to be killed in action since the Falklands War is one of the two latest British casualties in Afghanistan.
The Ministry of Defence said Lieutenant Colonel Rupert Thorneloe, 39, from Oxfordshire, of the 1st Battalion Welsh Guards, died in Helmand on Wednesday.
The head of the British Army, General Sir Richard Dannatt, said he was "an outstanding commanding officer."
