Zee Avi is a young Malaysian singer-songwriter who only found out two years ago that her true calling was not becoming a novelist, but instead a singer and songwriter. Thanks to her old computer, a webcam and a headphone set with a microphone, she was on her way to musical fame.
Avi is among those stars who began to twinkle in the 21st-century, a time when the internet and social networking sites dominate the world of the music business. She is a sparkling gem whose talent was discovered from her videos on YouTube.
Once a little girl from a small town of Miri, Sarawak, Avi, now 23, is living her dream far away from home, as her debut album was produced in the US, under the roof of Brushfire Records _ a record label partly owned by US acoustic singer Jack Johnson.
Last month, Avi shared with 'Outlook' the details of her digital fairy tale during her visit to Thailand, as she staged her debut performance at the 3rd Bangkok Arte Weekend music festival.
''It all started out of boredom,'' said Avi, or Izyan Alirahman, who returned to her home country in 2007 from London, where she completed her bachelor's degree in Fashion Design at American InterContinental University.
At 12 years of age, Avi relocated from Borneo to the capital city, Kuala Lumpur, where she has been based since. Once she turned 17, Avi began to learn how to play the guitar. However, her favourite instrument was left in her bedroom in Malaysia for four years, while she was away to further her education in the UK.
''When I came back home, I had a lot of time on my hands, so I caught up on creative writing and reading and started to write a novel. I was kind of trying to reflect on things which I didn't have a chance to do while in London.''
Avi recalled that by the time she earned her bachelor's degree, her passion in fashion was gradually dying. However, it was rather obvious that her fashionista soul was still present. With a petite figure and fair complexion, she appeared at the interview wit
