Make sure to vote on August 4th. A vote for Issue 1 is a vote for protecting Columbus. The 0.5% income tax increase is absolutely critical. City leaders have held the line on taxes - the last tax increase was in 1982, even though demand for city services has increased as population has grown by almost a third. While spending has been curtailed through cuts and efficiencies, more revenue is needed NOW to avoid deeper cuts and maintain our quality of life. Safeguard Crucial Fire, Police, Refuse and Recreation Services City leaders have already slashed budgets and made deep cuts to core city services. Without Issue 1, the City will be forced to lay off hundreds of police officers and fire fighters, severely restrict park and recreational services, and substantially reduce the frequency of trash pickup. Strengthen our Economy Not only will Issue 1 maintain essential city services, it will also protect our local economy by ensuring Columbus remains a safe and attractive place businesses want to stay. Businesses thrive and jobs are created when communities maintain a strong quality of life. Protect the Middle-Class Issue 1 is fair for the middle-class, seniors, and everyone suffering during these tough economic times. Social Security, veterans’ benefits, and pensions are all exempt, and those out of work or struggling will pay little to no tax at all. Those who live outside the city but work inside will pay their fair share as well.
