In my freshman composition class, I had my students read Shelby Steele's "On Being Black and Middle Class." It's quite a controversial article, advocating conformity with middle class (read white?) values over the representation of "authentic" blackness as victimized.
So, of course, one of my students sent me a video from The Daily Show, an episode from July 28, 2009, about the Henry Louis Gates incident. Can't wait to bring it in for discussion!
