original description

On Sept. 16, 2009, Sen. Max Baucus (D-Mont.) unveiled his big healthcare plan, which seems to me to be one of those plans that tried to make a lot of people happy, but pissed everyone off instead. Considering my precarious situation, I’d rather piss half of the people and make the other half happy, because at least it would make more sense in the long run. I’ve made my case about the fact that people simply need to get off their fat asses and take personal responsibility for their bodies to help with rising costs so that universal coverage can work. MSNBC reprinted an AP story that shows that Baucus’s plan actually goes against what President Barack Obama and other lawmakers are trying to do to make healthcare reform actually work. In fact, it’s been said, this plan will actually make the insurance companies richer. The bill does mean everyone has to get coverage, but it does not force any change in the insurance industry, which is what is needed to drive costs down and truly have reform in this country. It also does not allow for choice, which has been a major sticking point on both the conservative and liberal side of this debate. I’m also a big proponent of the public option, which is also not provided in this bill either. During this entire debate, Congressman Anthony Weiner (D-N.Y.) has been a huge proponent of the public option and has been outspoken about it and has made a lot of good points. An interview with Weiner on “Countdown with Keith Olbermann” prior to the release of the details of the bill is available at the end of this post. He pointed out the major flaws of the Baucus bill that I agree with. Basically, his response is, “thanks, but no thanks.” I agree. This bill will not work.
