Glittery half-crowns graced the heads of hundreds of little girls, mostly African American, who flocked to the Bridge in University City, Philly, US Saturday dressed in their princess finery for a film first that befitted their royal attire. I have always loved the magic of disney and it had never crossed my mind that in 86 years Disney has never had a black princess as a leading lady until the Princess and the frog came to my attention. Tiana - the beautiful and plucky heroine in The Princess and the Frog, which led the US box office over the weekend, grossing more than $25 million. I never really took note not beacuse I am colour blind but it was a cartoon and I knew I was no princess, what i realise now is black people derive from great kings and queens of Africa so I should always think of myself as a Queen and teach my daughter and son this too. But just beacuse I know this it doesn't mind the generations know this and as moregirls and boys watch and probably listen to Miley Cryus and Zac Efron rather then parents it is nice to see Disney using a new role model. " Sleeping Beauty, Snow White. I mean, I watched them, but now I can say I couldn't relate to them," says Tanita Kidane, 42, of University City, who came with her 11-year-old daughter, Rebecca. "I used to wear towels on my head to make it seem like I had long hair. . . . It's hard not to have a role model." Tiana's positive self-image is affirming for mums, daughters and even sons, future footballers have no excuse we are in the media more. Finally, we have an undeniably brown-skinned princess with full lips, round hips, and a Southern lilt that sounds like a favorite American cousin, just waiting for it to be released over in the UK in 2010 and for all black princess's and princes' to don there crowns.
