UFCW hosted a press conference today to release a new report detailing which corporations have the most employees receiving public benefits. On-hand were State Reps. Tony Yuko & Dan Stewart, as well as State Sen. Nina Turner. The report is available in PDF format. Not surprisingly, Wal-mart's name appears frequently. Based on the average benefit costs (and annualizing from the June 2009 numbers), Ohio spends roughly $68.5 million a year providing Wal-mart employees with Medicaid, food stamps and 'welfare' (Ohio Works First, which is part of Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, the successor to welfare). Like, State Senator Turner pointed out during her remarks, there is an irony that in a country as rich as ours that the phrase "the working poor" even exists.
