what people are saying

The powerful earthquake that rocked the South Pacific yesterday is estimated to be between 8.0 and 8.3 on the richter scale, therefore producing a Tsunami with Samoa and America Samoa's taking direct hits. At least 99 people are confirmed dead, dozens more are missing, and, many villages on the tiny Pacific islands have been leveled. The tsunami came in four waves with estimated wave heights between 15 to 20 feet. In Pago Pago (the capital city of American Samoa), the streets were filled with water, debris, mud, overturned cars and boats. While clean up has begun, it is going to be a long process. According to the Associated Press, it could take up to a month before areas have electricity back on. Warnings were issued yesterday for Hawaii, coastal California, Oregon, and Washington in preparation for the effects from the tsunami in the South Pacific. While no major flooding is expected in these areas, the concern is strong rip currents and powerful waves which prompted the closure of beaches as precautionary measures. Yesterday's tsunami was powerful, however, it was not as large or devastating as the 2004 tsunami in the Indian Ocean that killed over 200,000 people. Today the entire South Pacific region remains prepared for aftershocks that set off yesterday's killer tsunami. Click after the jump for some after effects of the Tsunami...
