A number of people have pointed me towards PhotoSketch, a research/student project from Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, at National University of Singapore (now there is a mouthful). Supposedly a couple of students have figured out a way to automatically turn a sketch into a composite image, complete with amazing image extraction and other really cool stuff. All by simply by taking pictures from the internet.Just take a look at the video below.I must admit, that this sounds a bit too good to be true, but then again - you never know. The thing is though. These guys could make a fortune if they have invented a way to automatically extract parts of an image. Every single marketing department on the planet needs that. The sketch thing is just a bonus. Also: See research paper (PDF)(via Kottke, and email)- Read Comments
"According to authors, their software can take any rough sketch, with the shape of each element labeled with its name, find images corresponding to each drawn element, judge which are a better match to the shapes, and then seamlessly merge it all into one single image.
PhotoSketch's blending algorithm analyzes each of these images, compares them with each other, and decides which are better for the blending process. It automatically traces and places them into a single photograph, matching the scene, and adding shadows. Of course, the results are less than perfect, but they are good enough:"
@gilesphelps pointed to this article about PhotoSketch, a web app that's apparently for creating montages, but actually does a whole load of really clever stuff.
This is utterly insane. A research team from several universities has put together a system whereby you can draw a terrible stick picture sketch, label your blobby objects what they're supposed to be, and it will essentially photoshop something together for you that meets your criteria. I kid you not. It's early, experimental, and questionably useful, but it's just too cool to not share with you guys.Seriously, you can't miss this.Seriously.
