This place should be shut down immediately. The narrator is worse than a jerk. His comments show complete ignorance. To put the mother and baby elephant through this is horrific. A cement floor? Its a miracle the baby wasn't knocked out dead. Shame on them!
Wow! amazing. Not only the ease of the birth, but the determination of the mother to get the baby to breathe. And the baby walking! What an incredbile site to see.
How absolutely beautiful!! And to think there are disqusting Poachers who kill for tusks and Ivory and leave these beautiful creatures to die. A planet is judged by the way it treats nature.
Wonderful that the Mom was relaxed enuf around staff (substitute female elephants) to accomplish this with no human intervention. The trouble w/alot of humans who watch this type of activity is that they don't understand due to ignorance. We are very fast to put our own emotions and judgement as humans, onto the animals. Yes, maybe it would have been better to not use cement, but think of where this takes place naturally - on the hard ground. And yes, her kicking was to stimulate the lungs into breathing just like we smack ours on the ass. Usually the hard ground is all it takes to force that first inhale. We take towels and rub briskly to stimulate breathing and heart function in little puppies when they're taken by c-section. This takes the place of vigorous licking by the mother because she's under anesthesia and can't do it. People don't give animals enough credit for having "their" sense, we look at them with "our" sense and become critical because it wasn't done the way "we" think it should have been done. That is bordering on arrogance. If you are another elephant, then you are free to comment and criticize all you want. Kudos to the staff - they know more than you do.

Animals in the wild do not give birth on cement. This is not giving human emotion to animals just common sense. I remember a baby panda dying after birth as the newborn flew to the cement at a zoo here in US. What do you think happens when any newborn hits pavement?

I thought it was an awesome video.. Still I don't understand why she couldn't have given birth outside in at least a hayed area.. I agree with the above statement that the baby was probably having so much trouble at the beginning because of the cement! That just don't make any sense to me!

EXACTLY what I was thinking. Certainly in the wild, even hard-packed earth would be somewhat softer or at least warmer than concrete? And yes, in the wild she would have had the support of her friends and family. I agree we as animals have a long way to go before we reach the sophistication and compassion of elephants, but these particular humans are at least trying to evolve. And that's a lot more than I can say for most other humans. I love elephants even more now. What an amazing video.
Yes, why on earth would they make this elephant give birth on a cement floor? That baby
could have died on impact.it probably took so long to breathe because it was stunned from impact. The floor is also cold and slippery. What were they thinking?
Should have allowed her to give birth outdoors in subdued lightingin a place chosen by the expectant mother. It could have been filmed using night cameras. If this is the treatment a newborn gets, I cringe to think of what lies ahead for this innocent creature and her mother.
Graphic footage of the first ever elephant birth filmed in Bali, Indonesia. The founder of the Elephant Safari Park at Taro, Bali, Nigel Mason talks us through the experience. You won't regret watc...
